oil from rear breather hose

i have oil (intermittently) coming from rear breather hose. seems to happen when realy hot outside.ive replace check valve ,changed oil and i dont have running issues or smoke from exhaust. i did what you sugested and ran rear hose to ground and added second hose to rear of crankcase. could 3 quarts of oil be too much?... happens much less when oil level is bout 3/4 of quart low. oil pump check ball? breather valve in cam chest, wrong micron oil filter ? im using EVo style filter ... based on 1995 Harley - my most recent scenario was yesterday... 40 miles of back roads and nothing. stopped for gas . and after 15 more miles i stopped at light and oil just ran out of hose all over ground .. spot bout 4 inches in diameter and drops came out of hose for the next 5 miles till i got home . oil on rear tire etc.. im really confused... thanks in advance ,Chris

side note. the oil filter is a 21 micron rating and i know we should be using 30 micron filters...

Sound like blowby to me. I ran the oil level pretty low and it solve the problem. 3 qts on an oil change with filter sounded about right for me. mine use to puke oil all over the place. I put a puke can on the bottom to catch all the oil and after a day of riding i would just let it drain onto a rags in the garage. Do a search on this forum on "puke can" and you'll get different ideas.

Is this oil blowby a new issue? Did you make any changes to you setup? What kind of Air Cleaner are you running on your bike?

With the 04 models it has top end breathers through banjo bolts and a bottom end crankcase breather.

I'm a little confused on ..

What do you mean added second hose to rear of crankcase? Was it not there before?


You need to make sure that both cylinders have the correct fittings/bolt and are able to breath from the top end. Most guys just get banjo bolts and breath through their air cleaners but some guys have them routed to a puke can. The stock S&S backplate should have the correct breather bolts and the crankcase breather actually routes to the back of the plate.

Mine was doing the same at one time and did what CC said.

I also added a homemade puke can that I made out of a shot bottle of Bacardi. It works pretty well and haven't had any issues in a while. The bottle is plactic and hasn't melted any, holding up pretty good. It's been probably 2 years. About to change it up to a different flavor though:roll::roll::roll:.

I'll post up a pic when I get a chance.

no. not new.. just seems worse now than ever. and yes i did add a crankcase hose per a recommendation from John Sachs...mine is first year 117.. and has rear head breather hose w black and white check valve

SSW+ breathing

this only applies to the super sidwinder plus series of motors, including the 124, 117
SSW+


s&s 124has two breathing systems that can be used seperately, or together
1 case breathing
2 head breathing
3 together

1 case only....block off both holes in head, pick a case hole, block the other....one way valve not needed, but can be used to blow out...but not suck in

2 head breathing only: front head hose to intake manifold, this is recommended but optional, both carb manifold and front head hose can be blocked off, rear head hose to carb backing plate....with one way check valve blowing out of head...into carb, and MUST be used, regardless of the front setup, block off both case vent holes

3 head and case breathing...use either one of the case vent holes, use a one way check valve blowing out on the case hose, front head hose to intake manifold, rear head hose MUST have a second one way valve installed breathing out only

in both head breathing and head and case breathing, rear head MUST have the check valve....front head applies manifold vacuum to the case and the rear hose relieves crankcase pressure....the front sucks...the rear blows

black end of valve always faces out...all of this only applies to SSW+ and NOT SSW

Had the same problem on my 03 Pitbull.... the 107's" just breathe that way.... but I was able to reduce it significantly by switching motor oil to Mobil-1 SYN for V-Twins.

S&S tech told me since im using the crankcase "ports" on rear of engine case to vent ... that i shud try to plug both heads and see what it does. apparently this is more common than i thought.

Ahhhh now we making sense. You should not need a puke can on the 117 its got the new breathing style as its a SSW+.

I'm really not any use anymore cause I dont have any experience with that engine although I haven't heard any other guys having this issue on that engine. And I don't think many have opened up their case breather:confused:



Looks like you got word from an S&S tech that backed up by the literature in the book. Although I would be cautious about case only option.

Says check valve not necessary but could be used to blow out but not suck? If you block both head holes and you put a check valve only allowing blow out and no suck seems like your missing the SUCK....just my opinion


Just out of curiousity is your front head blocked? I think most guys run the front to the intake manifold and rear to ground or back plate of S&S with a blow out check valve only.

i think it just time to tear it down.... its got to be blow by.... but i wana ride the rest of the season...

Just a thought...

It could be the oil filter isn't passing enough oil back to the tank and flooding the engine sump at higher RPMs. You could try a different brand oil filter. K&N 170 with 20-50w oil seems to work on our 117's.
