Negative Post Melt Down & Now No Spark..

I have a 1999 Vintage Sport with a 107 and I'm having a few issues. I've been searching and cannot find any info on what I'm experiencing so if I could get a little help I would appreciate it…

A little back ground....I purchased the bike over a month ago. It had been sitting for close to 10 years. So I know there would be issues and I took to my local bike shop to have them take a look at it. It's ben there for little over three weeks. Fluids replaced, tanks lined, tires replaced, new battery, new intake gaskets, brake pads, master carb kit and rebuild and last of all new ignition.

Got the bike back yesterday afternoon. Took out this morning and ended up on the side of the road with a dead bike and smoke pouring out from under my ass.....

Pulled the seat and found that the negative post melted clean off......Called a friend and got the bike back home. Called another buddy and he said it was more than likely the regulator. He said that it was over charging and caused the melt down.

Installed new battery so I could start it and test the voltage and now I do not have spark......

Where do I go from here?

Do you guys think if the regulator is allowing the system to over charge that it would burn up the ignition?

Should I go and buy both?

Should I start looking somewhere else??

Thanks,

Bill

did you look at the bottom of the seat pan to see if it might have just shorted out?? sometimes there is not much clearance.

I have seen posts melt from just being loose, I would check for other burnt wiring and fix.

I keep a 10mm wrench in my side bag just for that reason and check it often especially on long runs.

I would bet that it was loose like others already said. I had the same thing happen to mine because of the connection.

It's all old so I'm updaeting what I can

Thanks for the info on loose connections. I'll keep an eye on them from here on out.

I've traced everthing, cannot find an issue and still no fire. Week before last the bike left the guy from the bike shop on the side of the road as well. No spark..
They replaced the ignition. Said it might be the coil but better to change the ignition first and if there were still probelms then go with the coil. So, I'm going to change the coil and regulator.
I plan on going with the Cycle Electric CE-320L on the regulator.
I have no idea what coil to use. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a single fire system on the 107. I've looked up single fire coils but have no idea on what Ohm to get. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, what is the best online source for parts?

Still No Fire Need help!!

OK, the igintion pick up was replaced so I skipped testing it until tonight. Thought it was the coil. I replaced the coil and still no spark.

With the key on and the run switch on I have power to the coil and to the igintion pick up and both right at the ignition module and right at the pick up under the nose cone.

Tested plug wires and replaced the plugs. Still no spark.......

The ignition module (Thunder Heart) LED lights when the run switch is engaged. It stays solid when I turn the bike over. Could this be the issue?

What else do I need to check?

I really don't want to dump $250 on the module if there is something else I need to check..... :bang:

I recently had this same problem. Smoke from under the seat melted negitive battery post and all.

This was on a buddy's bike an 04 pitbull but very similar problem. The bike would get spark some times and them just die.

As it turned out some of the wires under the council melted also and would short out. We replaced what we thought were all the melted wires and the same problem. We looked again and sure enough there was one more wire that was shorting out. Replaced that one and no more problems.

If you want to test your thunder heart let me know, a member here gave me one to try and I can send it to you to try.

Same thing also happened to me , installed a brand new braille battery and the negitive was loose and caused it to melt down the terminal, got a new battery and made sure the connections were tight and then nothing wouldnt turn over etc... until i realized I had the wires to the battery connected incorrectly so fixed that and all was fine, good luck
