Headlight Ring is stuck? Anyone got any tricks?

I don't know how it happened but my headlight is set about 30 degrees off. This f'n thing got me so pissed earlier today I had to just walk away:angry: . I took out both screws and can not turn it at all. I shot some carb cleaner around the ring to clean out all of the dirt. One guy told me to take my heat gun to the outside of the headlight. Do you think this will hurt the chrome?

Any other tricks to pop this out? If not, I'm going to have to drill a hole and tap it out.

Thanks.

I used some 2 sided tape at 4 opposite points and it gave me some real good traction to twist the ring. :2thumbs: also some LIGHT tapping with a rubber mallet.

I had my stuck so bad one time that I basically had to knock a couple of notches into the side with a chisel to get them out. Used the notches so that I could work it around the a drift punch.

Was not great for the ring, but it work and after I cleaned the ring up, it was not too bad until I pony up the bucks to buy a new one.

What I found out is that the little set screw that keep the ring from coming loose actually had caused it to go egg shape and thus would not come out the normal way (keep that in mind when you tighten it back up).

Hope everyone has better luck than I did and not have to resort to hammers and chisels!!!

Unfortunately Yes, Hammer and chisels, but hey I can use both like a Michangelo! Sucks I know but it got the job done when nothing else would and believe me, I tried everything including the Gas Man Photo Tutorial.

Will try to pick up a ring from the junk pile at the dealer next time I am in (barring they have one-last time the didn't).

When you do get it off, remember the anti-seize when it goes back on. Makes it a WHOLE lot easier the next time...

Anti-seize, and getting the set screw just right - not too tight, and also not too loose - or you'll notice one day that your chrome trim ring just sorta disappeared! :bang:

Some of the bikes had a recall on the bulb connector and this was a dealer fix under warranty. Got the bike home and the bulb was loose. Both the chrome trim ring and the band against the light were cross threaded.

Good item to check behind the dealer!

Tap all around the ring with a rubber mallet , then use the double sided tape trick. should spin right off.

I'll take it GS, mine is shot from having my jacket strapped to the top of it. All the chrome is gone.

Thanks,
Ray

Alright, finally got it off. I tried all of the tricks above, double sided tape, heat guy, rubber hammer:spank: . Nothing worked so.......I took a 5/64 drill bit and drilled a small hole in the center of the top of the ring. You can't see it unless your looking for it. I then took a punch and tapped the thing loose. Then I wrapped tape, sticky side OUT around my thumbs and took this f'n ring off.

The screw that locks this in place f'd up the threads. That's why it was stuck. Great Job designing this one:job: . I cleaned it up and had to use the nail to tap it back into place. I put the locking screw in place and wouldn't you know it, the threads are stripped. I ended up putting it in the 2nd hole. We'll see if it holds....

I had the same thing happen. Cross thread is easy to do with such fine threads and the large ring. Basicaly trashed my headlight bucket getting the trim & inner ring off. Check e-bay on a new HL bucket with rings. I bought a new/used take off for $30 bucks.
