Need help. Transmission Trouble. New member.

My name is Ryan Hopkins from Ky. I own a 06 Ridgeback. I love my bike. The first Big Dog I had was a 08 Mutt. I sold it and hence the Ridgeback. I wasn't sure if I posted here or in tech. My problem is on Saturday I was on my way back home from a ride when I looked down and seen gear oil on my frame. It was only a mile or so after that when I went to gear down that I heard a grinding in 2nd and 1st gears while rolling to a stop. I pulled straight over to a parts store and got some 75/140 Mobile one (Spectra or Ami sol was not available). I removed the tranny dipstick and sure enough it was dry. I put in about 14oz and it quietened down a lot but it is still grinding in 1st when pulling out or stopping. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

first you need to find out where the fluid leaked out and then get back to us. may have ended up leaking through the seal into the primary. pull the inspection plate on the primary and see if you have too much fluid in there. there is only one quart in the primary and it will probably be fairly thin (20/50).

The fluid is leaking from behind the sprocket on the final drive.

you need the main drive shaft seal and quad o ring... there is also a allen head screw behind there that loosens up ck all the bolts and torque to spkl...ck drive shaft for any up down,side to side..if any movement gonna need to get in tranny and replace bearings...lots of threads on this main seal and quad ring you can get at any harley dealership...forgot part # but its on here..search is your friend....if movement pm bobby schults...hezz great with the trannys and will walk you threw it or do it for you. peace...and welcome fellow ridgeback

Thanks, Tom and Bill. Without taking anything apart I can stick my fingers behind the sprocket and detect a slight bit of movement. Is there suppose to be any?

Had the same issue here are the part #'s http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/general/30672-has-leak-between-pully-tranny.html Look at post #3 for part #'s and more info. Might look at your splines on the front sprocket and replace it 34 tooth it happened to mine. Yes Bobby is the one to help with trannys. Just a side note I had the same gears grinding and found out that SB 1090 or 1091 I believe was not done on my bike ( bolt on countershaft needed an upgrade counter washer- This will be located behind the primary on the clutch side on the tranny next to the out put shaft.)

Thanks to everyone for the info. Phatchopper300 was right. The output sprocket nut had wore down the keeper nuts and backed off. A local bike mechanic( James Blevins owner of Jim's Custom Cycles located near Pikeville, KY) fixed it all for me for what I thought was a good price, and he did it quick. I have put a couple hundred miles on it since and it is doing great. Bobby Schults helped me out a lot and I would like to thank him too.
