clutch cable adjustment issues

i have a clutch adjustment concern... i myself have adjusted my clutch just like everyone has stated to do. the problem im having is that after i tighten my nut on the push rod and start to take out the slack from the clutch cable, i have to extend the clutch cable ALL the way out.. to the point that there isnt much room to go any farther at all. im almost running out of threads on the damn thing. its a pretty new cable since i broke my previous one.. almost seems like its slightly too long of a cable... any suggestions??

Question, why did you adjust the cable to begin with? Was it because you replaced it? Was there this much slack it before?

yes i had to replace it.. before i broke it i pulled my tranny and had to have it rebuilt by baker

The thing is a cable can be really long but that should not make a difference on taking up the slack for the lever. Meaning there is only so much movement from the cable inside the sleeve to pull the clutch in/out. I am wondering if you have the clutch adjusted properly. When you took your your pulley cover apart could you may have put it back together wrond, it would be hard to though?

well i was thinking if the cable was too long, then thats the reason why i have to adjust it so much... to take up the extra slack. i dont know what i would of put together wrong. im almost thinking about buying a new cable just to see if that helps out any.

If the ball,and ramp wasn't in the right position it could cause this. Happened when I replaced my cable. Loosen the pushrod some,then tighten the jam nut,turn the pushrod clockwise. If the ball,and ramp was in the wrong spot that should put it back where it belongs. Then adjust to spec.

I have to agree with Jason here. If your clutch cable were 3 feet longer, it should still adjust the same. You would just have 3 feet of cable sticking out from your bike. There's nothing wrong with having to extend your threads out as long as you still have enough to hold the locknut in place. Is your clutch operating as it should?

Too Long; This Is A Problem?

kiethcuda, I also have replaced the clutch cable on my K-9. I later had to replace the clutch with a Bandit Bruiser which was recommended by Bobby Schulz who, bye the way, is a top knotch guy! The clutch was and is the best modification yet! I did the adjustment, as instructed, with a dial-indicator which is the only way to go. My cable also only has a few threads but the load is a compressive one and IMHO is not a concern. If I were you, I would just watch the adjuster and see if any problems arise. If not let her rip! the clutch works great.. i cant complain about its operation any.
