Steering bearing race removal

Can anyone help? I have a 2005 Ridgeback that needs the steering bearings replaced. I have taken the bike apart and I have been stumpend when it came to removing the bearing race. I have removed these on other bikes before with ease,but Big Dogs set up is a bit different. Has anyone done this before that can help? Thank you Mike:

Long punch won't work?

I've popped them out of my 04 with a brass drift no problem.

Pencil.....draw it out.... Seriously a long punch from the bottom and or top to remove the race....

I have an 06 K9 and I was not able to get anything under the race. I ended up using the small cut off discs and my dremel tool. I cut it at a long steep angle not a vertical cut to allow the wheel to cut the back of the race. I tapped a screwdriver into the cut to spread it and the little bit that the wheel would not cut broke out. It is easy to pull the new races in with some threaded rod and a couple of fender washers. I hope this helps.

This sounds strange but...if you very carefully run a bead of weld on the race, let it cool, the weld will shrink and pull the race away from the housing.

2005 must be different. The race sits in a neckcup. There is not any way to get a punch under the race. You can knock out the neckcup but the race would still be in it.

I have had to cut some of them out with a dremel tool if I could not get under them with a punch or puller.

Wife's 05 Chop is a DT frame and has the cups. I bumped the cups out with a brass drift where they were eaiser to work on. I ended up cutting the race with a dremel (as Bobby Schulz & Olde Man said).

2 things:

1. Bottom cup has a pin in it that keeps the cup from turning. If it gets damaged etc, the bottom cup will rotate and the fork stop won't work.

2. Freeze the races and they will go in much eaiser.

Can you rent or barrow a bearing race removal tool from an auto parts store like Autozone, NAPA or O'Reilly's ect...

One sure way is to take a welder and weld a bead across the bearing race in several places and allow it to cool down, it will just fall out. But you have to be very careful. Disconnect the battery also. This is what I had to do on my 05 chopper. When it cools down the bearing race will shrink.
