Getting the new bike to Herndon Va...???

So I am trying to figure out how to get the new bike up here where I am working after it arrives in SC. I would love to fly down and just ride it back but with no knowledge of the bikes history it is just too risky. I could just have it shipped but I am looking for other ideas and thought I would throw this out for opinions. Anyone heading up here from the Charleston SC area in a month or so? Bringing a trailer...riding....? I would gladly ride it up if I have a safety net in case of a catastrophic failure. Worst case scenario is have it shipped....

Do you have a tow vehicle like a pick-up? I picked mine up from 750 miles away. I rented an open 9' trailer with drop down ramp from u- haul. Bike just fit and there are loops for tie downs. Do not rent a motorcycle trailer, as they are too small.

I picked up a dog last year while I was assigned to a project in ABQ, New Mexico. When I finished up in March of this year, I decided to ship the bike back to my home in SC, instead of spending the time to fly home, get my truck, go back and pick it up myself so I decided on Keyboard Motorcycle Shipping. Bike arrived in 6 days, but when my wife received it and went over it with the trucker, it was not damage free. Headlight was cracked and it had a 1 1/2" white scuff mark on the left side of the tank. Now that pissed me off when she sent me the photos. I've since fixed the busted headlight, but the mark in the tank would not buff out. Not sure to date if I'll get anything for the damage. The light, no big deal. The tank is a big faking deal to me. Not just like it's painted soils black where it could be a easy fix. Guess what I'm saying is, if you decide to ship, you may want to stay clear of using Keyboard. To me, their website seems to make you think all they ship on their trucks are bikes. Bull Shit!!! If it's on their drivers route and needs picking up and hauled it will be packed in beside your prized dog.

Go for the ride, just check the user and make a plan for the site, not sure where you have to go to but if it is up the east coast, plenty of people that could help you out if you had a major failure.

Where do you have to go from SC for final destination? Seem to miss that part!

That would be a good ride! Best way to get to know the new bike.

Find a truck to borrow. You're welcome to borrow my enclosed trailer - holds two bikes, but it's configured for a single bike right now and it's just sitt'n doing nothing in the back yard. I'm over in Chantilly.
Charleston is an easy run.

You could rent the u haul pickup to haul the u haul 9ft motorcycle trailer. The trailer is 25 a day not sure how much for pickup. The trailer is real nice.

Shoot me a pm on the location of the bike. I live a couple towns north of Charleston and know alot of the bikes in the area. I can lend a hand for the southern part of the trip if you had a problem.

Thanks everyone, not sure what will work to be honest. The bike will get to Moncks Corner on the 5th of May and I will need to get title and plates so probably mid or late May. I will get serious before too long here!:2thumbs::cheers:

GDog, I bought my dog at American Biker in Charleston. If you wanted to ride it back to Virginia, maybe they would be willing to give it a good going over, change the fluids, etc., and if it checked out ok, get you a AAA RV Plus membership. I believe mine has one 200 mile tow, and four 100 mile tows. At least you would have a safety net.

I know they're no longer a dealer, but there may still be a wrench there that is familiar with Big Dogs.

Just a thought. I rode mine back to NC from Charleston.
