Just ordered me a Bell Custom 500 Skratch pinstripe matte black helmet. Have worn a novelty polo for a long time but with 2 little daughters at home and a guy I know just getting killed on a bike from major head injuries, I am going DOT. Not sure ow much difference it makes but can't hurt. Will let you all know what I think. :D

Sorry to hear about your friend, glad to hear about the helmet. How can you be sure of the right fit ordering, or did they size the helmet for you?

AlDog I think that's a very good move. Not just for the protection but insurance companies will look for reasons not to pay a claim. Medical bills or even life insurance for your family. So sorry to hear of your friend death. If you live in a state where helmets are required, might as well wear a DOT.

I measured my head and looked at their sizing chart. Also compared it to the stable of my other helmets to see how they fit and such. The good news is if it doesn't fit, Bell has a pretty easy exchange process. I don't have a dealer local to me that carries them.

Usually they have sizing charts and you take your measurement and then order accordingly.
Exactly :D

That was another big driving factor for me. I have read more and more that insurance companies will balk at payment with non DOT helmets in a helmet required state. I know insurance companies will look for any reason they can not to pay and that would be the last thing I would want my wife having to fight if something were to happen to me.

I`ve been wearing a skid-lid since the law was adopted due to the Federal Government threat to with-hold highway funds in 1967. The legislature caved in and the Fed`s law came in force here in Alabama I think in April 1968. It seems normal to have a brain-bucket on when going for a ride now.

Sorry for the loss of your friend.
I too am wearing a DOT helmet know. I bought a Daytona helmet - someone here on the BDB site said they were comfortable and not very bulbus.
I like the fit / look - but the bouble chin strap adjuster has me puzzel'd - takes
too long to put it off and on - I guess I'll get used to it.
Ride safe .

Probably was me.......I love mine. smallest DOT I've found. The chin strap should be just like any other helmet. Strap goes through both, then around and over the first on and inside the second one. Just like on a dirt bike helmet...... At least thats how mine was when I was a kid...hahaha .......A Long time ago.

I see a lot of guys wearing these retro style helmets.
How are the in the heat? They seem like they would be hot to me.

Anyway, I wore my first DOT road helmet last week for the first time in decades. It is the Bell Pit Boss. I was surprised by how comfortable it really was. Much better than a HD helmet I bought and sold 3 days later 10 years ago. I too liked the feeling of having my brain protected if only slightly.

So I got it in today and it is a great quality, good looking helmet. Came in a cool box that has a pick of Skratch and a pinup model he painted gold. It fits extremely well and seems like the fit will only get better. I put it on a few different times and it felt better each time. Fits down on my head pretty far. Can't wait to see how it will be on a ride. It does look a bit goofy compared to my polo novelty but anything is going to just because the DOTs are bigger because of the foam. Will give more info once I go for a ride. I think it will be nice over my ears vs the constant wind noise. We'll see :D

I've been riding with a Novelty Chrome Polo helmet since 2004. I just bought a BELL CUSTOM 500 in Flat Black. It arrived last week, still in the box. I'll be testing it out soon.

I've been wearing a Bell RT black since I bought the dog to ride. I like the 3/4 open-face protection and the ear protection from wind/noise. The RT has a black rubber edge instead of the chrome retro edge on the 500 series. Not sure on inside quality and comfort features on the Bell 500 but I think they may be close or the 500 a bit better with the quilted material. The 500 is a bit lighter in weight as well.

I wore a McHale? 3/4 helmet back in the day when I raced short track and TT so I stuck with it because the style always served me well. I always have a retro visor on the front to give it that look.

Looking into the Bell 500 in the future.
