Bikes getting a makeover

I was planning on doing the redwood run in june and may rent a Harley to make the trip. I am gutting the bike and going to get some things done. I am taking everything off the bike. Being very meticulous and will post pics when I get to the stripped down version of the pitbull... doing all of the strip down myself and rebuild.... more to come may be down for awhile.... May be calling Jim at Karata soon primary is almost off. This is by far the most I have ever done may be calling on some of you gearheads but so far doing it piece by piece. more to follow!!!!

Looking good Paul. I'm heading the opposite direction of you! My pit is going back together. Started with a WP and ended up powder coating the frame. Holler if you need anything. I'll be glad to share what I learned in the process. Hell, its almost as much fun tearing one down as riding the damn thing....IMO.:D

I wish I had more money.
What do you plan on doing with your old tanks? I love those. That's why I got the mastiff.

Okay 1st question: I am having a hell of a time breaking the forward nut of the primary. 1 1/2" nut. I dont want to fuck up the engine rod. I have you tubed it and they use a special tool to keep it from rotating. I have read all the threads on the Clutch Nut but not much has been said about the "drive sprocket

Just about anything will work to jam it. I've used scrap aluminum or a rag.... as long as it doesn't damage any teeth or the drive chain. Course I use an electric impact too.....it will come loose eventually. You can use a heat gun carefully and heat the nut also.

Agreed, heat up the nut and block the sproket with a thick rag and use a big azz breaker bar. Works every time for me...

Not sure yet still deciding if a new tank is what I want to do. I really don't want to have to mess with the alignment or changing the mounting brackets.

I've got another set I would part with. Both tanks could stand a re-line. One has some rust the other isn't bad.

Thanks HMAN my tanks are not in bad condition just really would like to go to a single tank instead of the dual tanks. I really don't like the plasice cover between the 2 tanks.

The electric impact is the best way to pull primary nuts. Not as abusive as breaker bars when things are overly snugged.

Good luck on your rebuild. It's all good.

I understand completly. I've thought about doing one in aluminum, but thinking is as far as I've gotten! Maybe a project for this winter?

This is kicking my ass !!!! used a heat gun and rags still not budging.. I purchased a impact driver to try and break the nut free,, nothing!!! 1. I am going to go tomorrow and get a primary sprocket tool. May look into getting a impact wrench as well. I tried the ghetto breaker bar of using a box wrench and applied a hell of alot of torque "lefty loosy" and shit just aint breaking free...

Yep... tried that too.:bang: Gave up and went to Harbor Freight. Got an electric impact for $39.99 and problem solved. :2thumbs: Works for the clutch hub nut too.

Impacts are great. I had to use one for almost 2 hours once on a 1968 BSA Oil Tank Filter plug! Thought I would never get that plug out. Used Kroil and everything else but heat to get it out.

Just so you know my service manual says the rear clutch hub nut is "Left Handed" torqued to 80 ftlbs while the forward one is normal "Righty Tighty and lefty loosy" but torqued somewhere between 150 and 175 ftlbs!:bang:

Finally got the primary off. here are some new pictures. need to get the belt and sprocket off to remove the tranny. I decided to stop at half way into a 6. this weekend I will pull the tranny. I have a painter getting lined up in about 2 weeks. here are some new photos from the Iphone.
