High MILEAGE Dogs !

Looking for a little help with purchase of a used K9. I have seen a bunch for sale over the last couple years, and never with more than 10-12k miles on'em. I found a local bike 2007 K9 that is in absolutely showroom condition. It's is a one owner, obviously well cared for - with lots of extras, including V&H big radius pipes and Super G breather. Stock motor with no engine work - Starts strong - runs smooth. Only issue... 21k miles! I know folks say that you can put a bunch of miles on these motors - but what am I in for with respect to servicing, adjustments, parts replacement with one of these at 21k?

OR - do I spend an extra $1300 and get a very similar bike (2007 K9) with only 1200 miles on it? .. (an unproven motor if you will).

Both are with very reputable dealers who don't have documented work records - as some of this is hard to substantiate with Big Dog out of business.

I just bought an 04 Pitbull last month with 20,000 miles on , bike looks new and only had it out a couple times but it runs great. I have an 05 HD low rider with 23000 miles on it all of which are my miles and the bike looks and runs like the day I bought it .

My friend has an 94 road king with 112,000 miles on it still runs like new.

Your choice tho. good luck either way.

21,ooo miles is nothing if it runs well. Expect to change out all the fluids on either anyway, so that cost is the same for both bikes. 1300.00 is a bunch of money if you don't have maintenance records on either of them. Just coming up on 30,000 on mine and never had a motor or tranny problem -- had a tranny gasket leak, but easy fix at 26,500 miles

I've got a bit more than that on my 07 K9
Mine too on showroom condition. It all depends on how they took care of it.
I would ask them if you can talk to the original owner.

Everything else being equal and if you like them both I'd spend the extra $1300 to get the one with 20000 less miles.

I have an 05 coming up on 30K now. Had issue with starter that was replaced the first year with new. That one has close to 25K on it. Had the original EHC replaced (it was good-but changed out under a TSB) and the second one lasted until I broke a pin with close to 15K or so on it, then changed it out due to broken pin. The last EHC got shorted out due to power harness issue, put my original second one back on (the one with the broken pin for the Oil Pressure light) and then put may 5-7k on that before changing it over to PDM, which has about 1500 miles it so far.

Never a tranny problem, no major engine problems thought they did change out the valve train when my 2 years was coming up due to guides were at limits, no issues since. Change the fluids, do the maintenance, watch how much mods you do and you should be good for many many years and mile with few to no issues. One broken clutch cable, set of wheel bearing, change of brake pads, original tire are getting close to replacement time. Changed out speedometer and currently have Dakota Digital on it which is working out very well. Changed battery 3 times (once due to the shorted power harness). Headlight bulb once, fork seals once, shocks are good and everything else is fine, though could use a new paint job or at least some clean-up and re-clear on the original.

No concerns about taking it on long cross country trips. I would also tend to lean towards the one with less miles be either would be a good deal. Try to do some more research and see if you can get a little better maintenance history on either one.

I woud spend the $1300 for the low mileage ride. I bought my 04 chopper a year ago with 3012 miles on it. Now have 4500. I also have 2 HDs but I enjoy the Dog the most.

Your fine........I've got 25K on my 2003 chopper. Bought it 2/27/09 with 11K on it. Done nothing to it but the standard maintenance, and fresh tires twice.

I would buy the bike I liked the best....but if everything is equal (looks and extras) I would buy the one with less miles.

I wouldn't let the 21K miles scare me, but for $1,300.00 more, I would get the almost NEW bike with only 1,200 miles. You could ride the lower mileage bike a few years, before reaching 21K miles.

Yes I am (when I am riding on them). They still show no signs of rot, are good on the thread-still. Been meaning th change them for the last couple of years due to age only, but since I spend so much time away from home, when I am there, prefer to go riding instead of waiting on the bike to get done. Especially the last couple of times due to very limited time with weather and change over to PDM.

Hopefully change them out next time home, but they are still showing good to be honest! Now on the Buell different story!

I have 48,000 miles on my K9 and the only things I have done to it are head gaskets(10.5:1 cr) and 1 clutch cable. These Dogs will run a long time if you maintain them.

have 35000 miles on my 2006 K9, and looks and run great. I would get the one you like color etc. but if you like both $1300.00 for less mileage is what I would do.

I like the lower the miles the better for me. Better for resale down the road as well. Just saying

That 07 with only 1200 miles isn't even broke in yet. Sitting around that much might not be good for it either.

my opinion is a 07 is a great year to buy. Newer had less hp and older had more problems. I think by 07 BDM was putting out a decent bike and was at the top of their game
