Speedo/Odom & gear issues

Was having difficulty shifting into lower gears, read through this site and based on recommendations, I lubed the heims joints with lithium grease/silicone and gears are shifting smoothly now:2thumbs:



Also my speedo and odometer were not working plus bike struggled to start (big bore battery), so I orddered a new battery (braille) and swapped out tonight, after swapping, the bike would not start, no power at all, the battery was fully charged and reads 12.8volts. Before swapping out the bike started, now nothing. I made sure positive and negative cables were connected correctly. Any ideas would be appreciated. I added a couple pics.

I can see in you picture that the heat shrink tubing is caught between the ring-tounge connectors causing them not to fit tight together.......cut back some of the heat shrink. You also have the spacer on the wrong side of the wires. It goes next to the battery terminal.

They don't look real clean either....use a brass wire brush and clean everything in the connection area.

I had the same problem with a Braille battery (Brand new) and it was no good. It read 12.8 volts, but would drop to 10.5 when you hit the starter button. Battery would not turn the engine over at all. Sent it back for warranty and they shipped me another one. No problems since.

You may want to put that battery on a tender over night and try it tomorrow. Also what BDB1 stated above

Broke cable to battery positive

Was cleaning/heat shrink work and found broke cable going to battery positive. Not sure if I broke it or was already broke and is causing my original problem. The broke cable is only about 6 inches long and is connected to a small box. I have pics. Have any idea purpose of cable/box or how to repair/replace?

Yup did that. Right out of the box, I put it on tender for the night and then read volts at 12.8. Think one of my battery cable connections are bad.

Thats your main circuit breaker Chief. Hook it back up and it should start up. If you don't get power make sure it isn't tripped, there is a reset knob on the side of it.

Sorry I didn't make it over last weekend but the New Years thing got to me.

I will re-check it tomorrow and see what reading I get during start-up.

No problem Ray, I understand...maybe some other time, I'm always here and you can stay with us if you make it through Pcola. I fixed the broke terminal wire and hooked it back up and it started no problem, drove it around neighborhood and the speedo/odom still not working. Tomorrow I will check volts during start up to see if new battery is bad. I'm getting 13.5 volts with bike powered off.

If the scoot started up without any problems, I wouldn't think the battery would be the problem with the Speedo/odometer issue. Sounds like either you have a bad wire, maybe bad speed sensor or the speedo unit itself may be bad. Check your wires out.

Thanks, thought I read a thread about wire plus and speedo problems. I saw yesterday that I have wire plus installed. Not sure where to find the speed sensor, have a electrician friend coming over to show me wire continuity. More to follow...

Yes. I went to walmart last night and bought crimping tool, then replaced the broke terminal ring that went to the positive from the circuit breaker. I reset it this morning and rode again; still no speedo/odom. Bike statrted up first time (no enricher; just two pulls on the throttle). Not sure which is the speed sensor. I took a pic...can you tell me which one's the speedo switch? and what are the other two switches? Also, Do you know what the yellow wire is (other pic)? It has a 20amp fuse in it that I replaced last night.

Chief, your speedo sensor is not in those pictures. It's mounted to the tranny by a countersunk allen head on the top starboard side near the bottom of the starter. Pull it and clean it off -- metal flake may have it reading bad. The yellow wire is non-standard. Do you have any accessory lights or electrical parts?

Chacha is correct, your speed sensor isn't shown here. The green wire with the red terminal goes to your starter solenoid. The green wire with the flat terminal connected to the brass looking fitting is your transmission neutral switch.

Thanks! I found where you're talking about. I pulled the sensor and cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner and rag. It was dirty but unfortunately the speedo/adom still inop. Guess its time to chase wires now? Rg yellow wire, I don't have additional electrical items. I bought the bike a month ago from dealer in Hattiesburg Ms. Did see where I have the wireplus installed maybe that yellow wire/fuse connector is for that?

You may need to remove the speedo, open it up and check for bad wire connections, loose connections etc..

The connector that supplies power/ground/signal to the speedo head may have come loose.
