speedo/odometer issue

I've read a lot about voltage at start up causing speedo and odometer to not work after starting. (This is my problem as well) If I switch to a Dakota Digital and keep the same battery will the problem continue? Is it a safer bet to replace battery? If so, any ideas on best avail battery? Also, any suggestions on a good battery tender?

Does your speedo sweep twice right now? BDM came out with a flash for the EHC that will force the speedo to power up after the motor is started. That is if your 06 has the USB plug on the EHC and not the "Serial" plug. The Dakota doesn't have this issue and is a great speedo that I've been using for quite awhile now. I have a "How To" on doing the swap.
As for the battery tender see our sponsor Don at Value-Tech.

Batteries are a personal choice, I just use the HD brand.

I have a Schumacher SpeedCharge Battery Maintainer and Charger. Got it from Wal-mart, had it for a year and it works fine so far.:2thumbs:

the speedo only sweeps once (to about 60mph) I've got the round plug on the EHC.. May just go DD..looks better anyway. Thanks for the additional info guys!

I have a 2000 bulldog and the speedometer works fine but the odometer will not display and if it does it's very dim and flickers. Does it just need replacing? If so, any leads on where i can get one?

Hi together,

the speedo on my 2007 K9 sometimes didn't work. Up to now it worked again after I restarted the bike. Sometimes I had to do it twice.
But from the last failure the speedo has been completely dead. Also the odo shows nothing at all.
The scoot runs great though - but no chance to estimate gas cunsumption without having an odo.
Do you have an idea? (Sorry, I used the search engine, but didn't find the right answers.)
Or is the Dakota the only way out? I'm not really a friend of digital displays on such a classic-style V-Twin chopper.

Thanks for your advices!

Your battery may be getting weak. The starting current is dropping the voltage causing your speedo not to work. That is why it works if you run down the road, stop and restart. You can also keep your battery on a tender. This happened to me even though the bike started fine. The BDM battery was original and 3 years old. I use it on my generator now. There was a flash to the EHC to reset the speedo after starting. I kind of liked the fact that it was a tell tail sign of a degrading battery. Once, I replaced the battery with a Braille, I had no more speedo issues.

Having said this, putting in a Dakota Digital is a piece of cake and has great features and accurate speed in every gear which I only had in 6th gear on the BD speedo. My original speedo now lives in a spare parts box.

Thank you Huw,

I keep the battery on a tender. But I didn't during the last weekend. Perhaps this is the reason. But - the speedo neither works while I'm riding.
Perhaps it's smart to arrange my taste in favour of the Dakota, which obviously has been keeping many Big Dog bikers satisfied.

Cheers

I had the same issue and replaced the battery fixed the issue. Get a battery with a minimum of 310 CCA's..

What happens is the battery drops below a certain point during startup the speedo will not initialize.
