I have never been on forum before, let alone a "chat room", can someone explain how this works here on the forum.

Far as i have seen, you can chat with the ones you have accepted in your profile as "friends"..... then at the bottom of the BDB page you will have the Chat bar. a list in the right of the online friends you can chat with...

Yep as chili said. That way you can control who contacts you.
