Tips for Hauling your Dog in a Enclosed Trailer

When I bought my K9 I had to go to Alabama to pick it up. 600 miles one way. I use a 6x12 enclosed trailer to haul my Dog. Everytime I hit a bump I stopped and unlocked the trailer and checked to see if it had fallen over. Must have stopped 50 times. Was paranoid all the way home. Had to take the Dog to Little Rock AR. Saturday for 5000 mile service, recall and warranty stuff (Had to leave it) Was also dropping off 2 six foot bookshelves. I could just picture the bookshelves falling over on the bike. Didn't want to worry about it all the way up there, so I came up with this idea. I used a wireless camera. Worked great.

The 2.5 inch monitor

The Camera

This is the wheel chock I used

The front straps have a loop in it. Does not have to be cranked down real hard. Just tight. Don't want to blow any seals

Rear Wheel uses one strap and a towel to protect rim

10 minute install on the camera (spliced into the dome light wires) and the monitor just plugs into the cigarette lighter. Nice and clean looking

The system is a VR3

Hope this helps. The piece of mind was priceless.

Thats a great idea. You could probably set one up to use as a back-up camera also. Thanks for the idea.

I use a wireless camera on my Travel trailer also. I use a 5.5 inch monitor with it. Makes backing the 34 footer a little easier.

The camera is a AWESOME idea!!!

But please... get some sheep whool covered dual eye loops straps.

Further and more important... please replace your front straps with wratchet style over the pull tension style. Those would be fine for the rear but not for the front. I have watched bikes losen up from using those. Further, get some 1.5"-2" wide straps.

I have to agree with Gasman on this, you need to replace the straps with ratcheting type and not the friction ones. The friction ones will loosen, it is just a matter of time, also when you use the ratchet type, make sure you get at least 1.5 turns around the center hub.

Go with the wider straps as well as some wool or other protective cover for where the strap wraps around the billet. You may also want to consider preloading the front a little. The other option is to get some of the better lcoking chocks that many have used on here and can give you better information.

May sound like overkill, but if you are that nervous about it falling over and put in a wireless (by the way good idea), I would take the extra step and go with better, wider straps with ratchets, and the other items.

Good luck and nice looking ride!

Camera is cool but wont keep the bike from falling. If a strap broke it would be on the floor before you could get stopped. Camera just lets you watch it fall. I do suggest double strapping the front forks just in case one lets go. If I were you I would also buy some wool soft ties so they dont mark up your tripple trees.

That's a good link Kick!

Butch is probably right... I have never double strapped before but now with my condor I don't think you would have to. It may hold it upright even if one cut loose... not sure though... good idea nevertheless.

It must be just me but I really like his idea of the camera to make him feel all is well but my personal choice is out of site, out of mind! If my bike would happen to fall over in the trailer I don't want to know about it as I'm traveling. There would be nothing I could do as it has probably sustained all the damage already that it will do and that way I don't worry about it until I get there. Why take a chance on setting it upright and maybe having it fall again? Just my personal choice...
Of course I could really use that camera for backing up sometime..LOL!

Kick, thanks for that site pretty cool,as far as the camera that's awesome looks really clean ,but in my opinion I would do some back up straps just in case, you make some long ass trips with it,and it would suck to look over at the camera and watch it tip,but you know what your doin,so my opinion don't mean crap, later Lars:cheers:

Mickeetwo, the Power Tye the kickstart linked you to is what I use and they make them for Big Dog. They're the best that I have seen. One more thing that I have found is to get the ones with the spring loaded safety latch on the hooks. I had one get loose and come completely loose from the bike. Fortunately I had double strapped the front and didn't drop the bike. Oh camera idea is great!

Thanks for all the tips guys  . Going to make trailering it that much better. Really like the straps Kicks link had  . Gotta get some of those. I guess the only thing worse than stopping after a 600 mile trip and opening the doors and finding out it fell over is watching it fall over on TV :D . But I do like the piece of mind of it on the monitor. Now with your tips, I shouldn't have a problem. Thanks again guys. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Hey Mc,
Yea, it was good talking to you the other day, sorry we missed each other in Little Rock. I will tell you though, I was very lucky! After coming through the Tornado winds my trailer rocked and rolled, and even though I had my bike locked down with 2 straps in front and 2 straps in back all the shaking that went on in my trailer my bike was still upright when I took it out yesterday even though both rear straps had worked loose. Remember though my bike has been back there for about 2500 miles from the time I left Florida the first week of Jan. up to Michigan then back down to here. It was so cold in Mi. that I never even opened the trailer up to check on everything. But other than my bike being soda pop covered (2 cases of soda froze and exploded back there by the bike during the Michigan duration) all was fine. She is all cleaned up and rolling good. So make sure you use a separate strap on each side of the rear and front!

Al, like this and they still came loose?

Yup! I had to learn the hard way. Cheap straps & my road king was on its side when I got home. Luck for me it only bent the running board a little, but that was all it took. Next tow I had full 2" rachetable for the front (2 per side) & 1" rachetable on each swing arm.

Yup! $150 worth of straps. $28,000 Dog Math looks good to me.

Also Dont let your Bro's use cheap straps when towin with ya.
You might piss them off by making them get good straps, but they will think about the lost friendship when their bike falls over & f-ups your $3000 paint
