Woods cam

Is anybody running a Woods cam? After doing a bit of reading i think I will go for one of these when i change my cam - they seem to be designed (made by Andrews) specifically for torque, which is what i am looking for. As he says on the website "its not how fast you go but how fast you get there". Sounds good to me. I emailed them yesterday but no reply yet. Could be quite pricey though with the springs. I also read an article in American Iron mag (March I think) where the writer runs one and swears by it.

No I am not. I thru in the .600 S&S and springs but wish I had done a little more research. Am thinking about the Woods now though since I have already done the springs. The top end with the S&S is nice but I don't run it that hard and would like to get some of the lower end torque back.

Another thing that I believe we can do is change the rear sprocket from a 65 tooth to a 70 tooth. You're not gonna find a exact match on the style but it would change the final drive from like 2.9 to around 3.1. Where I live around the mountains 6th gear is rarely used.

Somebody kick my ass if I am way off base.:spank:

We put one of these cams in my K9 last spring. We also installed a set of Woods springs as well. The cam is a .650 lift. They are pricey. This cam was recommended to my by another biker. I already had the S&S cam in hand ready to install. Returned the S&S cam, got the Woods cam, and holy crap, does that cam work! Damn! The bike is a freekin stump puller for sure. Absolutely incredible!

Coolbreeze, if your out there, let us know what you thought when you test rode the bike.....!

Lee, I promise your gonna love it! The sound of motor from the Woods cam at idle makes the ground shake too....

What else was done to the engine besides the cam and springs? Any decking, porting or value swaps?

ok - Bob Wood replied to my email and I have to give him a call - I'll let you know what he says - for your info I have a stock engine (except for a "mild" cam - don't know which one though) but am running the Triple X G, S&S Single Bore dual intake, and StreetWalker RPJeez 2 into 1 exhaust.

Lee I would think that you may want to to a baseline dyno run before you get any cam just so you know what you got and where you are going!!!!

thats a good point Hoat and I totally appreciate what your saying but personally I'm not massively interested in what the numbers say - if the cam will make the bike feel more torquey out on the road then that is what I'm after

I'm kinda surprised you are complaining of a lack of low rpm torque. Mine has more than I could ever need and it'll almost toss you off the back of the bike if you hit it in first or second hard.

I'm not complaining - mine isn't bad at all but its always nice to have a bit more - I guess that would be why you have done decking work and changed your cam? I'm simply doing a similar thing but the Woods cam appeals to me more than the S&S

I was looking to increase overall efficiency of this engine to get it to run like it supposed to run, stock it's detuned to the point it hardly runs worth a damn due to emissions reasons.

You should consider getting your jugs cut to get your deck close to zero.

The general feeling is that the total quench or squish distance should be about .040". The quench distance is the compressed thickness of the head gasket plus the deck clearance. The quench area is the flat part of the piston that would contact a similar part of the head if you had .000 assembled quench height. In a running engine, the .040 quench height decreases to a close collision between the piston and the cylinder head. The shock wave from the near collision drives air at high velocity through the combustion chamber. This movement tends to cool hot spots, averages the chamber temperature, reduces detonation and increases power. The shock wave also provides better fuel/air mixing, and this allows the fuel to ignite better and burn faster. A faster burning fuel charge means less timing is required for optimum power output.

This becomes even more important when you install a larger cam. The jug height on BDM specific engines is pretty large (a lousy way to reduce compression). But bringing it to zero will give you an honest 10.5:1 compression (stock S&S head gasket). That's probably a 3% increase in power on a stock engine, more with a larger cam.

What is the price for this cam and springs and what else do you have done to your K9???

I thought I saw a chart where the 600 gives you more bottom end torque also (no question about top end).

I'm doing cams now and spent some time talking with Trotta last night, going over what we are doing to my bike. He said go with the 640 and they did many stock motors and no problems ever reported.

What else is interesting, I think, is he said a 117 with 640 cams is way stronger than the 124 with 600 cams he uses in his bikes now and his future builds will run the 117 instead of the 124

Just had a chance to read up again on this thread.....

Ok my man, this is what we did with my bike in the spring of 07. A very VERY rough polishing on the head intake. No porting. We decked the head .030, installed the Woods W6HF, and Woods springs too. The W6HF cam hits harder than the W9F cam, and performs better with our big inch motors. (Both W6HF and W9F are .650 lift) With the above mentioned engine modifications, the bike is a stump puller, to put it mildly. Just ask Coolbreeze. He's ridden the bike as well.

Coolbreeze and I both confirmed with S&S that the cylinders that are manufactured for engines that are used in all the BD's are +.060 than their standard cylinders. This allows BDM to have a lower compression, and pass all emmision requirements for their production bikes with ease.

You can take as much as .060 off your head with no problems with piston to deck clearance. I also know of a dealer in TN that regularly does this as part of their "Stage I" performance upgrade kit. With this much material off the head, your compression is near 10.8/11.0 to 1. This is a little high for street use in my opinion, unless you can run a quality race fuel in your bike (such as VP C12).

My bike did fine with the .030 off the head, with pump gas. No pings, no heat issues, no problem.

You'll love the power of the new cam. Its really incredible. If you need any headwork to your motor parts, let me know. We can handle all of your needs here at our shop.

interesting - Bob Wood sent me another email and recommended the W6HF for me, which is a 640 cam. High lift short duration. I think the cam is $380 plus springs, so not cheap - if you look on the website its all on there.
