HOT Key

I not sure if this is normal but now the I changed to a WirePlus switch switch I've notice that after riding the key is REALLY HOT TO TOUCH. I just wondering is it normal for the key to get this hot or it this a sign of another issue in the works?

Any feedback would be helpful.

Sounds like you are grounding out. Any smoke or burned wires or melted plastic smell?

No, none of that, and the bike runs fine. Even took a 300 miles ride and it runs like a chram. But when I go to shut the bike down with the key if I don't turn it fast and pull it out it will burn my hand. Everything else is working fine.

So I guess I maybe worrying about nothing. With the WirePlus key it's all metal, and the Big Dog key had some plastic around the edge. Maybe I didn't notice it because of the plastic. But boy it gets hot.:angry:

I talked with Jake about that...he said make sure those fiberglass washers go back between the coil and the heads...thats what those are there for

my key gets hot after long rides too...not so hot it burns me...but pretty hot....has done that ever since i got the bike..so i aint worried.

It is common sense. The ignition switch is mounted in a aluminum coil cover that is in contact with a 160-200 degree engine!

The coil cover gets almost as hot as the engine as long as the fiberglass insulators
are in between the coil cover and heads. If they are gone, then the coil cover will
get just as hot as the engine...

...so will the ignition switch and key!

It isn't heat generated by an electrical short, it's the 180 degree engine.

Hi Everyone:

I need some assistance in a on going problem with my 09 K-9

The engine pings under load and I feel it is ignition timing and there is no adjustment with the Big Dog EHC set up

Can anyone assist me in making the correct choice for a new style, adjustable and reliable ignition and can I still se the EHC or do I need to replace it with a wire plus system?

Any help is very much appreciated

Thanks Jake. Now I remember seeing one of those when doing some work on my bike. I must have lost them at some point. Going to replace those ASAP and see what happens.

OK, I replaced the washers that were missing and took the Dog out for a run. NO MORE HOT KEY. Damm, who knew? JAKE

While riding yesterday, I put my hand down by the key and you can feel the hot air blowing across the key from under the coil cover. Yeah it is hot. If you want a cool key, ya got to move it to the fridge.
