There is a problem if you are loosing free play in the clutch lever. This means your mainshaft in your transmission is moving laterally. This can happen from the clutch nut being backed off or the main bearing going in the case. The helical cut gears are forcing the mainshaft to move towards the right off the bike. Tightening up any free play that was available.I have an '08 Mastiff and mine is slipping. I have replaced the plates and adjusted the linkage. Turned it in until I feel it touch and backed it out 1 1/2 turns. Then adjusted the cable leaving a little play in the lever. What I do notice is under a load (accelerating) the play in the lever goes away. This is an intermitant problem. When there is play in the lever under all conditions, there will be no slippage. But when I can feel the play in the lever tighten up under a load I know it's going to slip above 3rd gear. I'm pulling my hair out. :bang: I'm wondering if the nut is loose. So I feel your pain along with everyone else. Time for a new Bandit clutch.
If you are backing off of the clutch push rod 1 and 1/2 turns that's to much free play. You only need to back off 1/4 turn. There is a problem if you are loosing free play in the clutch lever.
