Top End

Energy One
Looks like my pitbull is going to need a new top end. Compresssion is only at 85 in each cylinder. Shop has quoted me $1,187. That is rings, valves, etc but no new pistons. Assumes there is no damage to them. This seems a little high. Anybody have an idea what a fair cost would be.

Another round please
Yes that seems high to me also. If your doing it, consider new cam, bigger valves ect. I used Bennett Performance here in SoCal if your in this neck of the woods.

I did my rings, pistons, and had the cylinders bored .010 for a little under 500. Did the work my self. If the shop does head work also that sound about right.

Top end work is going to be the easiest work done on your dog. No electronics, no transmissions, no lower end to get to. There are several vendors on this site you can order from and be assurred you're getting the right parts. Besides saving a chunk of change, you'll end up having it repaired and back on the road a lot sooner too. You will need a couple of "special" tools that I can think of: 1) Valve spring compressor (I made one from a large "C" clamp), 2) valve guide remover and installer (if you need to change them), and 3) piston ring compressor. With those tools, you can pretty much do anything top end on your motor.

Ok. Question of the day. How difficult is it to do. I have looked at the manual and looked at some stuff online and it does not look too difficult. I have more than basic mechanical knowledge.

Just keep small ziplock baggies around and label everything together as you remove it. Maybe even take notes on the order you remove them. The main thing I had problems with was making sure the intake was properly aligned when I put it back on. Before you tighten down the jugs, install the intake and snug it up. Then use your torque wrench to tighten down the cylinders. It's critical that the intake has flush alignment to the heads. There's a few "how to" on here with some of the top end work. You can do it!

Here is some baseline pricing .

$75.00 rebuild head (each)
$30.00 cylinder bore (each)
$240.00 S&S piston set.

My recommendation is to do the cylinders too

Do the remove and install yourself. But send your parts out to john Sachs.
You'll be glad you did.

I think this is the way to go. Top end gasket set should be too expensive. If you have more than basic Mech Knowledge this project will
make you proud and glad you did the disassembly and assembly yourself.
