ok just read another post and since this topic is brought up figured it be a good place to post my issue as well. I have a 05 pitbull w the vance big radius pipes the d&m spike cleaner and xxx taz carb with the 585 s&s cam. I recently took my bike to the shop to have my tp rocker boxes switched out for s&s. The shop is now having a tuning issue with my bike because its not running right now. They state that it falls flat on its face off of idle and then picks up. Any suggestions? There not to familar with bdm and im missing alot of nice riding days. The i know the last setup he tried the inter jet was 32 but i dont know the main jet size off hand and he claims it still isnt getting enough gas and ordered a bigger one. He says these carbs are a pain to tune since they dont have a air bleed and im wondering if he knows what hes doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

like i said in the other thread, take a copy of this to your "mechanic" and tell him to look at item #13 and then take your bike and run for the hills. S&S Cycle | Carb Quick Guide

ignore the lecture in the other post. and thank you for starting your own thread.

I used that guide and it got rid of alot of my gurgle, pop, and backfiring after switching air cleaners. I thought i was gonna have to take it in and get rapped by the dealer for a rejet. I figured, i may as well give this a shot.

Lots of issues running a single spike filter. Trash it and get a duel or go back to stock. Looks cool but runs shitty. A few have had good luck, but I think more have not. Just for the sake of trying to fix your problems, change the breather back to stock and see if it helps. As for jets, the norm seems to be: Main (76-78), intermediate (31-33).

Ohh and also make sure you have absolutely no leaks. You're air cleaner is tight and fully seated on the carb with gasket, that will also make it run like shit. I speak from experience.

I also got a XXX carb from Bob. I run a highly modified BDM cover over a K&N filter.

Intermediate is a 33 and still running a litlle lean. Bob sent me a 34 and 35.....

Main is 78 and I will go for a 80.

I think your jets are too lean.

I put a duel runner on mine, it would fall on its face right after idle before i rejeted .
Tried a 32, same problem. Tried 33, same problem. I went to a 36, it fixed the stumble but i was rich, i ordered a 34 from zippers, it came today, installed it (5 minutes), runs great with 34 .

I have the xxx card, dual runner and Thunderheart ignition, jets are 34-80, runs great. I had the D&M spike, I was never able to get the bike to run right with that intake, that is the only reason I switched

Sounds like you need to find a shop that knows how to work on S&S. Did the bike do this before you took it in? Just now started after they worked on it? It's possible its the accelerator pump. Either needs to be adjusted or not working the way it should. The pump nozzle does get clogged from time to time. Also they do need to be rebuilt after time. Only costs around $9 retail. If these guys say they are hard to tune, they are not the shop to be working on your bike. S&S carbs are one of the easiest to tune. Not much to them. Have them check for an intake leak as well. If it was fine when you took it in, then they must have done something to it to cause the problem.
Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

S&s carb usually have an adjustable air bleed and if not easy to tap out and put in just takes a main jet size. Also ptake out vent plug if in . But bigdogtech is prob right does sound like accelerator pump. Just my 2 cents. Also I've had my share of problems and it usually turns out to be simple. And yours sounds like a cheap fix if you get it out of the steeler. You might be job security for the shop. Times are hard PEACE
