Will adding a tool bag damage my powder coat???

I purchased the $29 tool bag from Fox Creek Leather. What a great bag for the money! I got concerned after I strapped it to the bottom of my down tubes. I have the 2.5 extended controls and wanted the bag to sit in between them so I had to crank on the belt pretty good. I really don't care for the looks of the bag when it's almost dragging on the ground.

Will this eventually ruin my powder coat? I'm concerned with strapping this thing down so tight and over time the vibrations from the bike causing the leather belt to eat away at the clear and powder coat on my down tubes.

Thanks.

i would say you don't have anything to worry about, we own a powder coating buisness here in nashville and i have taken little thin aluminum sample plates that we have powder coated to show customers and beat them with a hammer and it would make dents in the plate but the paint would never crack or chip

Mario,
The pic below shows (although not the best detail) my tool roll attached to the downtubes. It's full leather and loaded with ACTUAL TOOLS so the weight is there.

I ran some nylon web strap through the mounting tabs on the roll, then under that added some heavy duty zip ties. The zip ties were cranked down to hold the bag in place. Rolled the black nylon strap around the tubes, trimmed it down and then finished up the edges using a soldering iron to "weld" the strap ends. Its been on the bike for two years and hasn't moved.

ANYTHING that you attach and can move will eventally rub steel, aluminum, paint or powdercoat. Keep it from moving as much as you can and you minimize the impact. The question is whether or not you want a "permanent" tool roll there or not. (Permanent being more than a year).

If your worried about it, put a piece of that clear rock guard material or you could try some invisgard from autotrim design. I have the invisgard on the downtubes and a piece of clear rock guard just below the front motor mount, directly behind my tool roll. It has been working great, no problems with only slight wear on the rock guard from debris getting in behind the tool roll. When the guard wears out, I'll put another new piece on. The only thing I did different was I ended up shortening the downtube pieces, just for personnal preference.

Here's a link to the invisgard stuff, also if you call them direct you do not have to purchase the entire kit, you can get what ever pieces you want.
