What year for emission motors?

Wondering what was the first year for the "cleaner" motors and also the EHC? Seems like based on the dyno #s a late model 107 is pretty even with a newer 117, unless you start throwing cash at it. True?

The 04 117 is the one to get. It had the big valves.
Sure love mine :D

Speaking of the '04 117".... what else can you tell me about it stlmikie...? I emailed S&S to no avail. I was/am curious to what's what with my motor.

04 117 is still a EPA motor even though it still had larger valves. There may have been a few early ones that had the larger 600 cam but I have yet to see one. My 04 117 had a April build date and had the taller EPA cylinders small 547 cam and weak ass springs. Of course all have been corrected but the only safe non epa motors were 107 motors from 04 and prior.

Hey Al... how would I tell the build date..? I ordered mine in Jan '04. I havnt done anything to my motor at all, other than pipes. Im thinking about getting it dyno'd to see where its at.

Roofdude, I was going by the mfg. date that was on the smaller downtube sticker. I know this does not mean the engine was made then but figured it was close. I believe there is also a way to check the through one of the digits in the VIN number but again this may not reflect the engine build date. But no matter what your cylinders are going to be EPA (taller length). So even if you have a 600 cam by chance you are still only running 9.6:1 compression. The true S&S version would put you at 10.2:1 but if you change cams I'd go all the way to 10.8:1 or even 11.0:1 when you cut the cylinders. The valves also were larger than the 05 models however were still slightly smaller that the original S&S version. My intakes were 1.937 and my exhaust were 1.600. I had them changed out to 2.0 and 1.625, and of course replaced all the springs.
