So I sent a message to BubbleHead, asking him what State/Location would possibly be best to setup shop for motorcycle repair. I would like to be in an area that is in need of a bigdog Tech. Most all H-D dealerships will not work on them because of a supposed liability issue. BubbleHead is thinking TX or Fl. What do you guys think? What state has the most need for a bigdog/H-D service center?
Thank you

I just wanta ride
Of course I would say NC. LOL Thats a tough one. I guess looking at the forum members and where they are located by state could be a good call. If you are looking at east coast I would say NY and FL also.

I'm thinking Michigan. 13198 Cove Ridge Dr. That would be right across the street for me. Is that being too selfish:roll::roll:

I would say Fl ot TX as well. I'd look at an area and google how many mc repair shops within that area to get an idea whether it's saturated already.

I will make it easy on you Andrew. You can stay right where you are, besides it wouldn't be that bad of a ride up for me from New Jersey. Ok maybe I am a little selfish also.

I really don't blame you for wanting to leave this state and going where it's warmer with year round riding.

My recommendation is to hone your question. What is your definition of "best"?

Assuming this will be your business, and that you will specialize on BDM but not be exclusive, and that you will be a service center vs bike dealer, here are some suggestions.

If you are willing to go anywhere start with doing some research.

Find out areas of the country least affected by this economy.
Search highest concentration of bikes sold per capita.
Search states with zero state income tax.
Contact state governor office for business incentives i.e. taxes, licenses, etc
Investigate competitive Indy shops in area
Then start looking in that state for best community, then building location.

Your decision tree should be based on pure business metrics. Remember this type of business thrives on customer loyalty so you'll have to plan your entrance into any market accordingly.

Good luck!

Are you wanting to fill the void where HD shops won't work on Big Dogs? Didn't know if you need to check with those too because both Harley dealers here in Tulsa OK will work on Big Dogs.

i think somewhere in Texas, no state tax, centrally located in middle of the country (east west), good riding weather year round, and besides thats where i live....

Come to Fl. No state income tax here. That ought to help out along with the fact that we might just have the most BD's here in the sunshine state.

Colorado! Some Harley dealerships here will not even touch an older HD. I mean even a 5 - 6 year old bike. It's crazy. There are BDMs, AIH, and Borgets here as we use to have dealers

Have you thought about being a traveling tech? Put together a group tech session where several owners get together, pay for your airfair, per diem, all the expenses and time working on scoots. If several went together, the costs may be the same as trailering a scoot to the shop.
Much more to this idea than listed but you get the jist.
