Belt making noise again

Second time to take 05 chopper in for belt making major noise. Worked out nice becuase another Recall Notice: Rear Fender strut bolt fail and fender will detach and then the rest is history... My 05 likes the dealer better then me......

Your model was well know for squeaky belt noise. It was fixed by alignment of the drivetrain. Belt tension was also an issue.

Ray, Since I have the same yr/model and never had any problems with this belt squeeking, do you know what supposedly was unique about the model/yr that caused this belt squeeking? Was it something with the misalignment of the frame or bolt holes for the engine/trans that caused this? I just find it a little peculiar that the BD installers decided to pick on the 05 BD chopper as the bike that would have the misaligned belt installed so it has to be the mounting holes for the engine/trans. I have even taken my rear tire off and reinstalled it aligning both sides of the axles and everything worked out fine which it probably would not have if the frame was out of alignment. You have me confused, why the 05 BD chopper?

Amen Ray,

When I got my 05 home “used” it was fine for the first 20 miles. Then sqweeeealllll. The Stealer put belt dressing on it. I adjusted the belt, no good. Finally I broke all the bolts loose and re-aligned every thing. No more problems. The stealer had that bike on the floor for months and didn’t do any warranty or re-call work. I found out about all of that from Pinky!!! (Treasure Coast Harley/BDM Stuart Florida).

Thanks for info... The dealer talked with BIGDOG and they have a concerns with belts making noise... I will update you when I get it back on what they did to fix... I HOPE.... Thanks

here is another tip......a bud of mine had his belt squeaking like hell....he said he had the tire off and aligned and still squeaking....then one of his friends suggested on cleaning the belt.....so he took some warm soapy water and a old toothbrush.....and cleaned between the teeth on the whole belt....blew off with air when he was done...and he had no more squeaking....he said his belt was dirty as hell!

Don't know if it's isolated to just the 05 Chopper but I think there was a SB on shimming the tranny for better alignment.
Mine was isolated to a worn belt and pulley so BD warrantied the pulley but I had to buy the belt. Then it was aligned properly and I now have no squealing anymore.
My next pulley will be altered by Supermax. If you do a lot of miles this is the way to go I believe.

replace the belt with a dayco panther belt. the gates belt you have on there is the problem.

Some claim they have; But I have heard they are good.

Note - 1-1/8 in belts are designed for show and not intended to replace factory O.E.M. belt. No manufacturers warranty claims are made or implied. Not to be used in lieu of 1-1/2 in wide belt.

Plus the Dayco site only lists car, truck and snowmobiles/ATV's. You find motorcycles (HD) under snowmobiles! :loony:

i tried everything from cleaning the belt, re-alignment at dealer 4 or 5 times, re-aligned myself countless times...new pulley, and replacing the belt was the only thing that worked for me. Big Dog actually covered the replacement under warranty for me. Of course, all situations...and bikes are different. I'm not using my BD as a stunt bike, so snapping the belt isn't a concern to me. If it were, I'd do a chain.
