Chaps burned on my pipes

Hey guys I've searched but can't find anything so I'll just ask. During the winter I was wearing my chaps and the right leg snap opened, the zipper ran up and the leg was flying behind me like a flag. Well before I could pull over the liner laid on my exhaust and burned to it leaving a caramel colored stain and some seared material. I have tried to clean it off but nothing seems to help at all. Ive tried with the pipes hot from riding too. Any help would be awesome.

I have used Turtle Wax Chrome polish along with a lot of elbow grease and patience. Put the polish on and let it set a bit.

Like Marv said, the 0000 steel wool will do the job just remember always do it with the metal cold.

Jay,
I had the same issue a few years ago and heard an assload of guaranteed cures for it......and only one worked. I'm not saying that this is the only fix but I can tell you that WD-40, mineral spirits, acetone, wax...blah, blah, blah did nothing to remove the charred crap. The only thing that worked like a charm was EZ-Off oven cleaner on hot pipes! Nothing stood a chance against this stuff. Keep it off the painted surfaces whatever you do!!!!!!!!!
Hope it works for you!

Guys, I dropped my sunglass bag (nylon) on my exhaust and it melted instantly, leaving a nasty brown gunk on the exhaust. I let the bike exhaust warm up, and took a popsicle stick and rubbed it off while it was hot. The material came right off, and then when it cooled, I used wizards chrome cleaner to finish the area. Worked great and you cant see the spot at all.

I have a spot on my pipes from the previous owner that looks like blue jean material tried to melt/burn to the pipes. I tried a little of the super fine steel wool, and didn't seem to work. I just left it on there to remind me that it is "Hot"!

Had a similar experience. I too was able to wipe most of it off with the pipes hot. Got it spit shined when it was cold.

if they are chrome the oven cleaner sounds best to me but what if they are ceramic coated ? I got mine hot, took off what I could with a piece of oak (I think pine sap would stain) then let it cool and buffed with auto paint buffing compound, my burn was from a knee high neoprene boot

Awesome, thanks for all of the replies. I will try. For those of you that used steel wool. didn't it leave scratches and swirls?

The dealer showed me when I got my bike. Semichrome polish...hot pipes...pure cotton towel. Took of the melted gunk. Then polished when cold.

Yup,oven cleaner!

not enough time 4 riding
Spray the oven cleaner on a cloth and put the cloth on the exhaust to be sure that no oven cleaner gets on the paint.
