Jetting for fun & profit

 Tom Chop was on around 40 mpg after break-in. After installing V&H`s and a Speed`s Performance breather, I re-jetted and maintained 40 mpg +or-. For those who are interested I had mains-0.074, intermediate-0.032, and air bleed-0.040.
Now down to the skinny--I live in the deep south. The tempratures here are extremely hot. Our Government, in it`s infinite wisdom, at decided to add at 10 to 15 percent methanol (alcohol). This mixture ends up making the fuels you buy cause our carburated air cooled engines run leaner. That is because there are not as many BTU`s (British Thermal Units) in relation to gasoline by volume. As an old rodder I know it takes roughly twice as much alcohol to equal the BTU`s that are in gasoline. This is supposed to save gas? It causes My mileage to drop 5 to 7 per cent, savings?
Now down to the worst part. While on a ride with a bro noticed I my scooter "pinging". I downshifted and that stopped that shit temporarily, but I was pissed and concerned.
I got the bike home and called a friend who works at a local oil refinery. Jocko informed me that the fuel in our area had been re-formulated this summer to include ethanol . Shit! But that isn`t all--we can look for more and more to be introduced from time to time in the future. Thanks Uncle Sam.
To Hell with the EPA-let our grand kids figure figure it out and we`ll keep screaming around on our beloved Big Dogs!
Take Care

Ran out of gas on 06 K9 @ 147 miles on trip odometer. Switched to reserve and ran another 5 miles, or so. I don't know how much the reserve had left, I managed to make it to a gas station before it ran out.

The 147 miles was 75% highway cruising 20% stop and go city side streets. Nothing crazy.

This seems like a appropriate place to post this. Before engine mods I was getting 38 MPG Hwy. Now after a 600 cam, breather, and exhaust I've down to 30 MPG. Got as low as 22 MPG the other day but that was parading and bar-hopping Memorial Day.

I recently went to Austin and back and filled up at about 136 miles with about 3.2 gallons if that helps. I did no less than 78 mph on a 2008 Ridgeback. I find this mileage is about right to take a break. Having said that, I should be able to push 150 to reserve.:2thumbs:

I filled up again on my trip into town and went 150.1 miles (no reserve needed) and filled her up with 3.45 gallons. Again, my highway speed was around 78 mph.:D

Update: I get 120 miles to and from work (13 miles each way) with 4 gallons to fill up.

Another Update: I have been getting better mileage around town at 35 to 36 mpg. So, I have been going up to 130 miles between fill-ups.
