2005 Chopper mods?

I am a new owner of my 2005 Chopper and was wondering what are some good "cheap" mods? What are some things I should look at changing out? I have done a lot of reading and searching through the forums already, I can tell you I have learned a lot. Thanks.

Things already done:
Vance and Hines exhaust
Removed the restrictor plates (I did)
K&N filter

I am looking at doing a cam swap and from what I understand the 05's have a 569 right? I am looking into a 600 Cam

What I am not sure of is the jetting of the bike. I do know it needs to be addressed because my plugs are black and sooty, which tells me rich right? However the bike runs great from what I can tell, I did take it for a 956 mile round trip to Orlando two weekends ago. The only real issue I have noticed is when starting the bike up it throws black smoke out but it does not do this during normal operation. What would cause that? Thanks in advance.

If you plan on putting in a 600 cam, you have a lot more to do than just a cam. Anything over a 585 (S&S) will need springs ect... do a search B4 to spend your money. There are no "cheap" mods.

I undertand there are no cheap mods that is for usre. I have read through many threads and some have mentioned certain springs are ok to use the 600 cam. Would an 05 even see a difference with the 585? That is not to big a step from the one already in the bike I thought?

The .585 cam is a good cam as well as the .590 lift cams from Woods. If you still have the E carb a good upgrade would be a XXX E carb (bored and boosted) If you have a G carb already then the same would apply XXX G carb. If you don't already have the G carb and you wanted to go that way you will also need to buy a intake manifold. A good air cleaner is the S&S Despardo, all you need is the cover it will bolt right on to the stock backing plate and work with your K&N filter.

All the mods cost some bucks. But the ones I listed arent to bad.

E carb jets prob in the .295/.74 starting range
G carb jets prob in the .31/.78 starting range.

There alots of mods you can make bu to feel some real butt kick you most likely would need to get into the jugs and heads and then empty the wallet from there.

Yes your stock cam should be a comp cams .569

Plugs black and sooty? Are you using the enrichener on the carb to start your bike and warm it up? If so Don't will foul up your plugs

Have fun:2thumbs:

V, no I am not using the enricher. I have been looking at the XXX carb idea, probably going to give them a call to see what they can do for me. I am not going to get into the jugs of this bike, already did it with my sportster, the wife would get upset if she saw this one it a lot of pieces. lol

since your in florida i would consider contacting member john sachs. top shelf builder. pick his brain on a guaranteed combo then send him heads for port and shave. do the install yourself to save some bucks but the money spent will be well worth it.

the knowledge of what works and getting it right the first time. priceless.

I agree with you whole heartedly on that one.

Also those heads have the smaller valves in them. If you are going to put that 600 in there I would also have the heads done like Marv said. I am getting ready to do mine here soon. I ordered a XXX g carb and I already have my 600 cam. While I have it apart I am gonna switch out the TP rocker boxes with the S&S ones. Might want to consider these things.
I talked to John Sachs awhile back and he said he could work the heads so you wouldn't have to cut the jugs.

Hey Spadesluck....Restrictor plates, i have them so ive been told. Where and what are they, and are they a pain to drill out ? pic please if you have one.....or anyone else that would like to enlighten me. thanx.

Thanx guys, they were where i thought. On the case tomorrow.....
All I did was unbolt the intake from the heads with the carb still attached to get to the plates. I just took mine out abd put everything back together. I have not had any problems with leaks. Some are goign to tell you to get some spacers to put in place of the plates but that is going to be your call. I did a 956 mile round trip and had no leaks but that is me.

Spade,
While you are doing your research, also note that some have put a lot of money into what they felt was the best combination for power and speed, only to find they now have less power and speed and a lot less money. I have done a few mods but kept is fairly simple. I already had the red stripe springs, so I got a S&S 600 cam off ebay for less than a hundred bucks and dropped it in. I think I purchased a set of cam spacers from J&P cycles for about $12. You'll need to make sure your cam is properly spaced for endplay. I've had issues with the TP rocker boxes and plan to change those out. If I hadn't had any issues, and many have not, I would keep them. If you have a few bucks and want the most bang, then take Marv's advice and contact John Sachs, same user name and a member of this forum. Otherwise, keep it simple. Are you not satisfied with the way your dog is running now? Are those pesky Vespas passing you on the highway and flipping you off? Is your rear tire lasting longer than you think it should? So many questions, so little time.

Thanks for the info. I am happy with the bike but my only concern is the bike was dynoed by the previous owner and only put down around 70hp. I do beleive at the time it was not jetted properly and I know it had the restrictor plates in it. I plan on getting it redyno'd to see where I stand now though for a starting point.
