Dyno test?...beware

If you've recently had work done by a shop and they are also testing/dyno'ing your bike for you, don't believe everything you read from those numbers.

Seems there are shops "inflating" numbers to please their clients, when in fact there were very little changes to actual hp increases.

Spoke to a person who ran a dyno at a shop, and was informed this practice goes on ALOT. He told me that hp numbers can be fudged to show great increases, "to make the owner happy and wanting to invest just a little more".

Guys like to see big numbers on a dyno...I would tend to trust very few shops that have sold you "upgraded" parts, were his words to me.

If you've invested money on upgrades to your bike, take it to an independent shop for testing.

I pulled my own engine, crated it and shipped it to Hillside Cycles in Ny and I installed it back in the bike and took it to a local shop and had it dyno'd. I know my #'s are real!:2thumbs:

Dyno the scoot before and after at an independant shop for better results.

The builder of my atv motor (Arlen @LRD) told me to dyno it before pulling the motor and sending it to him, then after he puts it on his dyno for tuning, to take it back to the shop I used first for another dyno run and that will prove the true gains. He also pointed out to do this on days with similar weather patterns.
The dyno proved money was well spent.

Good tip Orangeskulz:2thumbs:

good idea, What's a dyno roughly cost these days?
Somewhere between $25,000 and $35,000 depending on what ya buy :D

Also read a article I believe by Donnie Peterson noting that the first run is typically lower due to the bike maybe not being to full operating temp. Then a intake is installed and the numbers are higher. some due to engine temp and some due to the new access. As noted bike and ambient temps should be as close as possible for each run.

Was gonna have the local Harley shop do mine (they are known for building good performance engines. Said my Ridgeback would fight their dyno but they would be dragging the frame to get it on there. No thanks.

Depends on the shop... I can get the bike done for about $80 I think around me.
That's just to strap it up and make a couple pulls? what If you wanted them to tune it as well. I want to find a good shop and get it dyno tuned. :2thumbs:

Yes, that's just strapin it on and runnin it. That place sells a lot of dirbikes and crotch rockets... not a place I'd let to try and tune my Dog.

just had my k9 in the shop and had them dyno tune it. they did runs before and after. the had to change out a mid range jet and they said it was out of tune as well. i took bike in because i felt it was not running as well as it should. bike had V&H pipes when i bought it, i had them do a cone filter and they just tuned it by hand no dyno. after that is when i noticed it was running a little different. took it in for new tires and had them dyno tune it. the pulls had increased hp by 5 and trq by 8 or so. it runs awesome. i have never hit rev-limitter. i hit it and was not even trying. i feel like i really got my moneys worth. they had like 2.5 hrs in it cost me around 180.00 jets and all.

Agree with every caution just stated! HP gains are usually EXTREMELY suspect, and due to the standard Baker tranny, I'd be reeeaaaal leary to go much above 100. (Usually has a tendency to screw it up royally because of back cut gears.) But I have thrown a 585 cam in my K9 and am VERY pleased with increased torque! My shop was honest, though...told me I wouldn't gain much hp, mainly just torque. And that's what I wanted. Can't remember the numbers beforehand, but now they're 125.6 torque @ 3,500 rpms and 100.31 hp @ 5100 rpms. Plenty good enuf for me!!!

Curious like Marv, was it an EFI and if so was the Dyno strickly inertia type or did it have a brake to allow it to be ran in steps to fine tune?
