Lean / Rich Adjustment

Lots of threads on here about how to tell if you are running lean / rich, jet sizing, carb set-up, etc.
I can't find anywhere (even the s&s instructions) telling you which way you adjust once you decide if you are lean, or rich.
Which way is leaner, and which way is richer?

Counter clockwise = ???:loony:
Clockwise =???:loony:

How about some help fellas.

Thanks

I'm going to take a stab and sure I will be corrected by the pro's. Counter Clockwise is rich and clockwise is lean. Just throwing my .02 in.

sounds right. screw it in and close the valve, screw it out and open the valve. righty tighty- lefty loosy.

Your jets are numbered in sizes. larger number is bigger jet means more fuel-richer.smaller size is leaner. Most guys out here run .031 or .032 intermediate jet. .074 or .076 0r .078.Main jet.
all depends where you live and modifications.As for your mixture screw up top S&S says about 1 1/2 turns out to left,I run mine about 2 1/4 out to left helps get rid of decel popping. Are you having any issues with the way it runs?

clockwise equals leaner (less fuel), counter clockwise equals richer (more fuel). However, this is really only for your idle adjustment, i.e. when the throttle is in the closed position. To adjust when you have the throttle open, cruising or accelerating, you need to change jets to change the mixture

I agree with Lee ..... the screw on top of the carb is for the idle metering circut only .....

spotchop ....how do your plugs look...

TURNING SCREW OUT (COUNTER CLOCKWISE) MAKES IDLE MIXTURE RICHER.TURNING SCREW IN (CLOCKWISE) MAKES MIXTURE LEANER. NORMALLY , CORRECTLY ADJUSTED SCREW WILL BE BETWEEN 1 1/4 AND 1 3/4 TURNS OUT FROM BOTTOM IF INTERMEDIATE JET IS CORRECT.

INSPECT YOUR SPARKPLUGS ,(BLACK SOOTY PLUGS INDICATES TO RICH.) (WHITE IS TO LEAN.)
(TAN IS GOOD.) :up:

My plugs were black & sooty. I knew that meant too rich, but didn't know which way too adjust. I changed from mean mothers, to VH BR 2-1's last week. They recomenmd the same jets for both, but it ran a little different.

Thanks for the help boys.................I knew I would find out here.

ok guys this sounds backwards to me...im a 2 stroke guy and on them the idle jet screw adjusts air to a set idle jet...screw it out to let in more air or lean the idle...screw it in and take away air...richer...do s&s carbs function opposite?

I think with the VH pipes they recommend .076 main jet and with mean mothers they say .078 main.
May be an elevation thing (desert here), but my dealer here said 076, 031 for both here, and that is what I am running. The MM's ran great with that set-up.
Yet to see if I can get the 2-1's running great with that set-up.
I'll update this as I chase it, although there are already a ton of threads on jetting / carb adjustments.

Bob: You have nothing to worry about. We don't have enough money or support to get the (Winnipeg Jets) Coyotoes back.

Sounds backwards. As noted:

Clockwise = Leaning out
Counterclockwise = Richer

And this is only for the Idle mixture screw. Nothing to do with jetting.
