Road Checks

Well just got in and made it thru a police road check. Have I had a few? Yes I have. Luckily I made it thru because I prob was a little over the limit 5 beers in 2 hours with dinner.

Problem here is the local sherrif decided he would help finish the construction of the Amherst County Visitors Center, with extra revenue from road checks and speed violations (promised by him above last years figures) to the county and chamber.

I am a local business man with 5 employees, I pay heavy taxes because it is a business as compared to residential.

Our local police force has changed from to protect and serve to simply raise revenue. I know there are members on the forum that are LEO. How do you personnaly fell about this change and how it affects tax payers rights?

I have seen enough where I have lived for 48 years that I can no longer offer resepect to LEO as they are just trying to hit "budget". And this has been told to me by several LEO's that I was in school with and know personally.

Its a sad situation when you are required to find minor offenders to raise revenue. How do you feel when you go home and had to do something you did not sign up for?

Where do you stand?

Its not just the local police forces ....but on a state level also:angry:

Wouldn't be so bad if you ignored the fact that the people who run the local and state governments were wasting the money they collect and the fact they are WAY Over paid !!!!!!!!!
65,000 state employees
If this don't get you going then you just don't care ..and this is just state level Salaries of Virginia state employees | Data Center Richmond Times-Dispatch Databases

The federal gov is the biggest waste of $$$ !!!! I personally know a few state employees they work MAYBE 15/20 hours a week . when they actually go to work!! OK i'm climbing off my soap box ..I'm just jealous I don't have a gravy job ..with great pay and no work ...too bad there is no work ethic anymore:angry: And once you get one of these cushy jobs ..its hard to get rid of you !!! The worst of this is that SO many people right now have lost there homes and savings to this mess ..all the while our elected reps live VERY well !!!!!!

Got the same problem in Fairfax Country Police District -- HQ is directing "Sobriety Check Points" to the stations. The stations are frustrated, but they know the REAL reason is revenue. One of the stations near me follows the requirement, but puts up the checkpoint in a place where no one goes.
Some stations are asshats about it and set them up on main drags near bars -- the businesses are fighting back.

My LEO friends cringe when I ask how the "Gestapo Stops" are going -- I think they honestly hate doing them, but the politicians set their schedule.

Raped with taxes then harassed by the man!:job:

Locally here they swear there are no quotas for citations but then at election time all you see is patrol cars every ½ mile in every direction pulling mostly bikers over!!!

Personally I dont get this......You come on the website and flat out tell you were drinkin and driving and got a break and your bitchin cause the police are out there doing their job......if it was your kid or wife or mother or sister that got ran over and hurt in an accident with a drunken driver the conversation would change 180 degrees....
We bitch if they do their jobs and then will be the first in line to complain when they dont.......

Yea, it's all about money. In Santa Monica, the meter maids are using tape measures to determine if people are too far from the curb. Sales tax is going up to 10.25% (in Santa Monica). I'm getting nickle and dimed to death with fees. I even got cited by the city for having a sign in my window that was a little too big. What ever happened to the land of the free? I guess freedom costs money.

Amen Brother. No new taxes. Just bullshit fees.
Every 2 years I must report to New York State if there has or hasn’t been a change in my address for my LLC.
Oh, and by the way send them a $9.00 check.:bang:
Just another Fee?
I don't think so.
Just another tax.

Jimi - I take and understand your point, but I think the complaint is about the use of police forces to raise revenue under the cover of protecting the populace. This all sounds good unless you step back and take in what this is about....

Expect to see more of this as our tax dollars are used to raise more tax dollars....

Here's another example -- police standing at automated toll booths, pointing for people to pull over fo no seat belts, expired tags or any other reason. It's happening down here and they know you got no choice 'cause your stuck in the lane.

Not sayin what I did was right. It was 5 over a min. 2 hour period with a full dinner.

Yes you guys have a good point I made the descision and am responsible for that. He did flashlight thing in my eyes and eyes side to side but never made me get out of the truck.

My point is how much it is changin with the law. I have lived in this are for 49 years (born here) and in the last 2 years have seen the change in how people are being treated. I'm a General Contractor and have done work at the local police office. Know a lot of the LEO from livin here so long. We have a scanner at work because we can hear bldg inspections, fire and police. We use it to direct crews if there is a wreck, or go to fire call to board up for owner etc.
Many times you would here a officer pull over some one for speeding and the resposne would be "10 ? Advice". You don't here that anymore. On Sunday mornings (sunday only) 2 miles from here they set up radar, the only main destination is Hardees' and many different churchs and there not after someone goin to hardees, there not late. But yes they are after the peps runnin late for church and writing tickets. There sittin accros from local restaurants waitin for people to leave. It's just become a frustration to see the extra force being put out there when this area has very little trouble and if you put a officer out there he has to earn his keep. I have been told this by several that they do have to meet a quota.

May have come accross a bit strong in my original post but meant to offend no one individual, we all have a job to do and we do have choices in what we are willin to do.

We are the taxpayers and should fear no government as the government should be workin for us.

As far as my response to the post about the DUI officer. He made the choice and now he's got to deal with it (sad situation). If others try to cover it up they should be dealt with to.

Its just gettin out of hand (gov) and we (the taxpayers) are takin it in the shorts

Again my apoligies if this was taken personally.

For the record I have not drank/been drunk and driven since the second week of January 1977 and glad of it. Never liked the taste of beer anyway, but I like the taste of straight whiskey, I still do like the taste of good whiskey, but only drink it for medicinal purposes anymore, that coughing crap in your chest, it works. Anyway, a friend of mine and my son in law were leaving their motorcycle club meeting, Saturday night late, and he had drank several beers earlier. His last words were to my son in law, We ride together, We die together". Less than a mile after saying that a car pulled out in front of him, and he hit it square in the side. He died they said probably instantly. His blood achohol showed he had been drinking too. It left a family really messed up is even the worst thing.

Please take advice from the old guy, do not do it!! And do not think it can't or it won't happen to you!!
My wife and daughter knows I used to be a drunk and smoked my share of weed in the day. My daughter has never seen me drunk, nor will my grand daughters. Will they ever see me turn a bottle of whiskey up when I am sick and drink it like water, very possibly. If you have people you think care about you, don't do it for them.
