Gunk in the Gas Tank???

Has anyone else experienced some really nasty looking gunk/slim building up in their gas tanks. Seems like every time I fill my scoot,..... I see more and more crud building up around the inner rim of the tank. I pulled out a clear almost like a film of material the other day about the size of a quarter? I have a new in-line filter in my fuel line now, but wonder how much of this gunk has made it into my carb?

lou, i had some of that shit too. i thought it was the lucus additive that i was putting in not mixing with the gas. i was told that it is some kind of tank liner from the factory and that it does get loose.
also, i think it was mentioned on the forum by some folks who really know. maybe one of those guys will jump in, chuck

Here is some of the stuff that came out of my tank....
I also posted the link with a bunch of other pics from the tank. They no longer use this method of coating the tanks and replaced mine. Unfortunately it rattles like crazy where the original did not on the frame. I put a extra shim behind the rubber boot on one side to see if it stop it from rattling on the frame but it still does it. Maybe I need a extra shim on the other side as well but it is a bitch trying to rotate the grommets in now to lock the tank down. Much worse when the tank is not full.

I just went thru this similar problem two days ago.

I had off and on low rpm hesitation when the bike was hot and then re- start after being off . (for example after refueling.):job:

here's how what I found;
  • disassemble and inspect gas cap breather-- nothing abnormal
  • drain gas tank, pull petcock, clean and flush both. found some solid clear shit laying around the base of the petcock. gas had some very small different particles floating around
  • pull bowl of carb, clean inspect jets (found nothing in jets). disassemble, inspect and clean accelarator pump assembly. (diaphram loaded with dirt particals some jell and alot of white residue.

bike does not hesitate any more !

What type of fuel filter? Got a pic. MANY MANY cant keep up with the flow these motors require.

Can't tell ta that right now,......it was installed by the the guys at Freedon Cycle, but I will find out. They had to get into the carb and clean it out and also change the thunder jet after the new 600 cam, springs, 10.6 to 1 compression bump, new Bandit clutch and dyno run. I will be picking the scoot up later today so I will find out what filter they installed. I also had a bad hesitation when hot,.......Frank said it could be some of the garbage probably got into the accelerator pump? I'll find out how it all pans out later today?

I found that same shit in the wife's 2003 Mastiff. I doubt BDM will pick up the tab to recoat now. It's definitely the tank coating that has separated and will only continue with time. Has anyone else had to have your tank re-coated? I would think that rust would form over time, especially if the tank gets low.

Recoating the tank is not hard - just takes time. Recommend "Kreem" products and there is a how-to on You Tube. Did mine this year during the rebuild.

guys let me explain what's at work here & more over my personal experience with petroleum based products the likes of the dredded ethanol based fuels.first off I work for the fl dept of agriculture as a petroleum inspector.I do gas pump calibration checks & fuel sampling @ the 425 stations assigned to me in NE Florida.what you are experiencing is the delamination (so to speak ) of the tank lining material caused by the ethanol based gas we now are forced to use.case in point recently visited a marina in palatka fl & the owner had a hatteras with 2 new rebuilt engines that lost 4 of the 8 cycles with in a 20 minute run down river, the hatteras had to be towed back.after checking the fuel system out it was discovered that the gelgoat lining the fibergalss tank had desolved & clogged the filters and also made it to the cyclinders and and left a black glass burned mess to the cylinder walls.the owner took the fuel samples in a jar let the ethanol evaporate after a few days and took the left over glass coating and added hardener to it and the fiberglass rehardened back to like new condition.ethanol in cars and trucks (especiallly gm/ford) products early on were vulneralble to filter clogging due to ethanol seperation & condensation & debris build up.this ethanol cleans like a white tornado.to this day I have periods where consumers still report bad gas which tuns out to be self induced due to low volume gas purchases and then blasting fresh ethanol in on a empty tank thus causing the dirt/water bild up to stay suspended in the fuel then only to be sucked into the filter when the engine is re-lit and driven a few miles.sorry for the length of this responce but that's what's happening because of the corn based fuels we are be forced to use. also spoke with tank at BD in tampa tuesday bout him having the same problem with his bike and others that sit for a while.

I'll be re-coating my wife's 2003 Mastiff this weekend. Just like the pictures above, large clear thin patches of liner had separated and would just float around. She has had problems with the bike stalling after it heated up and the carb bowl plug would always be full of some rusty crud. After doing a little research, I'm going to use Caswell Motorcycle tank liner that is specially formulated for use with ethenol fuels. There may be more of this problem out there than listed, so I'll do my duty as a new member and do my best to make GasMan proud with a "How To" on using this product to re-line a fuel tank. In the short time I've been a member, the help I've received from this site's members have been very much appreciated. For all your help, I would like to buy all active members on this site a beer. That's right!!!!!!! One beer, 986 straws. Cheers!:D

Well, I pulled the tank this evening and took pics along the way. It's worse than I expected. Much like the pics above but multiply that times ten with a pile several inches high of liner. I'll get it all together first of next week and post the "how to" for relining your fuel tank. Makes me wonder how many times Dogs had problems with fuel intake, stalling, spitting, etc, and all the time had this crap floating around in your tank. It's bad stuff and lots of it. More to come soon.

I did a bunch of research on re doing the tank lining and found alot of bad reports on the KREEM. I did my 35 year old tank on my harley and used the POR 15 kit for bikes. this stuff is good. however this won't be a quick job. with POR 15 You need to follow the instruction exactly. it will take two days to do it right. this product uses the acid etch which is why one of the reasons it works. here is the bike I used it on . PS I had a brand new paint job on it prior to doing it.

The exact same thing happened to me. That's the tank liner. My bike is still under warranty and Big Dog is going to redo it for me. I've just gotta find the time to get my bike in the shop and leave it for 2-3 months!

2-3 months? I sent my tank back to get the paint redone (under warranty) and took 2 months. Finally got it back and heard the clanging of the liner about the size of a large potato chip bouncing around inside the tank. :bang: Called B-D and they said to send it back and they will dissolve the old liner and spray in a new one. Why didn't they do it while they had it there the 1st time? I asked how long it will take and they told me a week. Sent it back a week ago, I hope their time frame was true! Been without the whole dog for way too long already!
