hey everyone,
I'm having a little trouble with my trans. Shifting from 3rd to 4th will miss sometimes and 3rd to 2nd will take a few tries and then will be a solid "clunk" engagement. all other gears shift fine to and from and neutral isn't a problem to find. the trans has redline heavy shockproof in it. I think that the shifter pawl needs adjusting but wanted to get your opinions and if you think that is the case, what is the easiest way to adjust the shifter pawl. the service manual says to remove the top trans cover and the adjuster is on the left side of the trans. keep in mind this is a K9 and removing the top cover means at the very least removing the rear exhaust, right side battery cover, and the adjuster screw doesnt have a lot of room requiring a ground down allen wrench. If you have any tips please pass them along. Also, I know its not the heim joints because I cleaned and lubed them and I can recreate the problem with the bike on the stand and just moving the tire and shifting by hand.

Narrow37, if you have the heim joints with the teflon inserts, this is what I would do. If you can recreate the problem on your stand, I would unbolt the linkage at the transmission and using just the shift lever at the transmission see if you can recreate the problem, ruling out the heim joints. If problem goes away then I would also check the toe shifter and be sure it is indexed with enough travel to up shift and down shift. If problem still exsist then open up the tranny.

Thanks for the responses guys. I got it adjusted, had to take the top cover off to do it by sight. Can anyone tell me what gaskets will fit the top cover. will harley work or will have to be baker or big dog. secondly, is there anything I should check out now that I am in there. everything looks fine from what I can see. I need to change the oil in it though.

well, bikes back together and seems to be shifting fine now. I readjusted the shifter pawl about 3 times just to make sure I got it right. I ran it through the gears up to 4th and back down with it running on the stand. Everything seemed ok but wont really know until I get to ride it. I dont want to do that again and I dont wish that on anyone. It's not that bad of a job, just tight spaces and a lot of crap to remove in order to do the job. I ended up making my own gasket from some fel-pro sheet material, just trace and cut as long as you can cut a straight line.

Glad to hear you got it figured out brother.

If you have any issues with the fel-pro let me know and I will get a Cometic Top Cover Gasket in for you. Should be fine though.

final update.
took the bike out for about 10 miles and everything shifted great up and down. never a problem. got home and changed out the fluid and 20 oz came out and 20 oz went in. looks like everything is good to go. I think the cause of this was I had a brain fart and while coasting I shifted up or down without the clutch and had good solid clunk and I think it knocked the shifter pawl out of whack.

What's the big deal with that?!?!?! That happens to me almost every time I ride home on Wednesday night. Or sometimes I hit the limiter before my brain tells me to shift. It sucks trying to do so much at one time coming home from wednesday nights. :roll::roll::roll:

I have a 05 ridgeback with 550 miles on it. I just had the first 500 mile service done and all the fluids changed. Now i'm having a really hard time finding neutral. Any ideas what could have happened?

If the moreon that did your service adjusted your clutch improperly that wood do it cause most lube techs at shops think they are motorsickle macanics cause the line techs think oil changes are beneath them
