The ten thousand dollar mistake

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. For my first BDM, I bought a new 04 Chopper, Rolling Thunder Chassis with 107 cc motor. I got the bug for more power, spent a ton of money on it. It was done right, Cycle City in TN and Fury Cycles in MN, they all helped me make sure it was right.:2thumbs:

I did a ton of research before I attemped the project. $$$$ can get out of hand, I feel your pain.

I sold the bike and bought a new 2008 K-9 EFI 117 cc, Only mods on this bike was Big Radius pipes. It's fast enough the way it is for me, right now..

Had the bike out twice since the mods. I took the bike to a test and tune day at the track tonight and had a 12.04 ET @ 110.7 mph on the first pass, which wasn't horrible considering my shifting was less then graceful and my reaction time was slightly better then a grandma. Next pass was a little worse and the clutch was toast. The right side of the bike was sprayed with oil. I believe the front push rod base seal is leaking. Back to the shop it goes. Weak link number one discovered. I want to do it right and get the best clutch available.

I couldn't find the 1st slip, but here is the second run. I had to dig it out of the trash can so I hope you are happy.

The mechanic is a little testy regarding the front tappet block leaking. He says it is a poor design. I told him that it has over 7K miles on it without leaking a drop...

I will have to come up to Ohio and burn some track up with you. A good friend of mine here in Tennessee is from Ohio and I will have to come up with him and cruise by and see ya.......
I like what you set out to do and it paves the way for others to make there decisions on building a bike......:2thumbs:
I built mine as well all motor but very stout for sure. I have put a lot of parts on it as I broke them twisted them and plumb wore them out but I did it cause I wanted too.
After I get through this divorce I will hit the road and meet some more of these members and share my experiences as well.
Marv, AlHall88, Gasman, BBchopper, Shovelcowboy, Chopper Dave, Raywood and Knotso are on my short list depending where I am at in the country...

No way you would do it? Be aware, there are more than a few of these motors running it with no ill effects. Most times the NOS is rarely used, and is usually just a novelty thing on these scoots. A shot at 30hp is not gonna rip your arms off. Try it out, have some fun, then just ride the scoot.

I love NOS, in moderation. Hell yeah.

I've owned & rode 170+hp sportbikes, a 30 shot of NOS is just a waste of $$$.

Hey Toad, just something to think about since you mentioned buying a crotch rocket was cheaper for speed.

You ran a 12.07 on your second pass and 109 mph+. The new BMW s1000rr will run to 168mph in 12 seconds....tell me how fuckin crazy that ride would be?

I'm in Ohio also and drag raced at Kil-Kare Dragway in Xenia, OH many times over the years. Last trip down the 1/4 mile on a bike there was about 19 years ago on a '91 ZX11 Kawasaki. 10.71 @ 133+, pretty damn fast back in those days, and that was on a STOCK bike.

Hey, we all do it! I spent some serious cash on my '93 Corvette trying to making faster then a C5 on the stock motor. Went through a converter and transmission just driving around town, new rear end which killed my top end along with other crap. I should have just gone heads and cam and screwed the idea of going faster on a stock motor... but I did it... and it was a waste of money.

I would like to do some work on my motor but my K9 has been pretty reliable and have left it alone for now.

Baker said they are designed to be quiet per BDM spec's and for about 100 hp. Around 120 hp they just start coming apart. Tried to get them to put in some straight cut gears to help hold the power but were not able to accommodate me due to the design of the case.


I can't believe that trans is that under engineered. Don't quite a few of these bikes make 100hp stock? If baker did that I'm very disappointed

I talked to a builder at laughlin with a 124 S&S he claimed making 200hp.
He uses baker 6 speeds and had one in this bike.

So what is better than a baker 6 speed?

I have 118hp right now on the motor, 148hp on the juice. I have just over 7K miles on the bike. No problems with the tranny yet, although I just got the bike back from having the motor built.

As for the part about being designed to be quiet, WTF? Like you could hear a tranny over the sound of our motors! That sounds like a bunch of bull shit.

Don't get me wrong, I am very pleased with the bikes performance now, it was just a long road with a bunch of unnecessary turns to finally get to this point. The performance is everything I hoped for, but if I was smart and had to do it over I could have stuck with one mechanic who knew what he was doing instead of three who messed up. Live and learn, right. I don't want pitty, I want some new owner to read this and think before they act, as I should have done. Engine mods are cool, but a crotch rocket is cheaper.

If you want a fast V-twin for little money, go buy a $4000 buell XB and then buy a $1500 turbo kit for it.

It will be all you can handle and will walk all over any Dog!

My last Jap bike I owned was a Honda CBR 900RR that had a Mr Turbo kit on it and I had Dyno slips for 207 HP at the rear wheel!!!

My wife bought me the Dog for our anniversary after I did a 30 mile trip home one night on the RR at 170-190 mph and getting stopped with finally 6 cop cars lined up behind us!!!! (No tickets )

A slow dog is a good thing!
