My bike will not start,it has a small click when you hit the start button.Guy at work told me to jump the starter by using jumper cables postive too the starter and negative to the frame using my truck for the jump.
Is this a good idea to see if my starter is fried?

I would have your battery load tested first. Yes what you have mentioned will bypass. But just because the bat has 12 volts doesn't mean its got the amps left.

Also you might do a search on starters here. there have been several posts on cleaning the contact, etc.

Also make sure your system is charging the bat, check VR output also make sure tha the circuit breaker or fuse is not tripped.

The battery is new and I keep it charged on a battery tender.I went to start the bike, it tried to turn over then I smelled something burning.
I am not sure how you tell if it is the starter or something else.

Hey pump, the most common item to burn and stink is usually the voltage regulator, very front down low with fins on it, take a gander at that. Could explain the no start. Do a search for the procedure for checking its output. DC out AC input that you can easily check with a meter.

Pull your seat off next time and try to see if something is smokin'. Don't want to jump to any conculusions but I know what happened to me when that happened twice.

Like Chris said - You shouldn't have any type of vehicle running when trying to jump start a bike.

I am no mechanic but I do remember changing the regulator on my harley a few years back.

Before I bought my 06 K9 I had a 04 Chopper. One day I went to start it and just got a bunch of clicking noises. Sounded as if they were coming from under the seat. After removing the battery as a variable I took it into the dealer. It needed a new starter.

Check the starter connection down below the battery. thick black cable. My guess it is loose or corroded. Make sure the rubber boot is not weather cracked and allowing water to get at the connection. If so..clean retighten and heat-shrink wrap.
