Got a question..
With the information we have accumulated here, with used bike selling for thousands less, (some with not even 500 miles) Doing it over, would it be new or used?

When you buy new...

MSRP Margin 20-25% over dealer cost. With a lot of work, patience and quite a bit of badgering (do not impulse buy, make several trips of 1-2 hours each with the same sales person. You will suck so much life out of them they will convince themselves they have to get some type of deal done to justify all the time spent) on your part, you can prob get a new bike for about 10% over cost. They will make their money on the upgrades and service.

If you buy used, you can often get just as good as new for less than a dealer would offer someone on a trade in. There are a lot of people hurting for money out there.

I have bought 3 bikes in the last 3 years. All of them have been used. I feel that Harley / BDM owners consider their bikes in the upper level and take better care of their toys.

But we are currently in a buyers market for everything. Homes, Bikes, Cars, Boats and even some daily staples.

As a society, a large percentage of consumers are over extended and need to become more liquid just to survive. Hence the reason there is such a glut of these high dollar toys being offered at cut rates.

It may not help our bikes current value, but we bought them to ride them right? Why not take advantage of an opportunity that someone else may not have had the foresight to see when they bought new.

Hell, tell yourself that you are helping someone out of a bad situation if that helps you sleep at night.

The situation was much different then. The used bikes were fetching alot more money. I could have picked up a used 06 mastiff with 1500 miles for 24k. It just wasn't the paint I wanted. I figured I would have to put another 2k in paint and probably wouldn't be on the level of big dog paint wise. So I spent 32k and got what I wanted. I didn't buy and investment. I bought a pastime. If I had to sell it tomorrow for 20k I wouldn't think twice about it.
If you are thinking about a second bike nows the time to relieve somone.

just wondering

I did buy my 06 Mastiff new. It took my half a year to make a move. I am not afraid to admit that I was very intimidated by the shear weight of these bikes, ( i came from sport bikes) I pulled it off the stand and thought, now way!, I can't ride this. But after 3 test rides,(my feet never left the ground on my first test in the parking lot at about 5mph) a super patient salesman and a Saturday at the dealer, I bought it. But every once in a while I'll look on Ebay or meet someone who just bought a used one. Then they tell me what the paid and my jaw hit the ground.
I'm certainly not knocking the bike. I too wanted something different that's why I went BDM. I love my bike and I see it being with me a long time!

I paid $12500 for my 02' Prosport w/ 6400 miles on her this past August. I looked at a couple of 2003 Mastiffs in the 15k range with similar miles. Good deals, but felt better about the Prosport.

My 1st big dog as well.

Called the dealer in Columbus for a basic book value and they said if I were to trade it in, I would be looking at about 13k. That was just a quick call with out any negotiations either way. Bank said the average sale at that time was $16900.

Even if I upgraded every thing to where I want it, I would still only have 20k or so in a big dog. That is at least 10k less than a stock model.

My ego can handle when someone tells me it is only an 02 and that the Prosport is not a current production bike.

It is still a Big Dog.

It really depends on what you want. If I was just looking for a great off-the-shelf bike at a great price, I would buy used. If I wanted the latest model, like a 2008 Ridgeback or Pitbull, I'd be buying new, just to have the latest and greatest. When I bought my 2007 K-9, I wanted to specify in great detail the paint scheme, and take advantage of the graphics artists they have at the factory. That drove me to buy new, and pay a premium price as well - but I got exactly what I wanted and was content with the price.

My problem with buying one of these bikes used is not knowing how it was treated. I for one don't hotrod my bike and want it to last a long time.
I know there are guys out there that are doing burnouts every weekend with there's.
With a Big Dog though you can demand an ignition printout and see how it's been run. This will easily tell you a lot and I bet it's rarely been done cause most people don't know about it when buying there first BD.
Also, with a new bike you have a lot of margin for bargaining. I was able to see the build sheets at my last dealer when I traded my 03 Mastiff for my Chopper and was astonished to see all the prices (in 05) of $16,000 to $19,000 for each of the bikes. But they do need to make quite a profit when only selling one or two bikes a month to cover overhead.

For the new guys that have never seen one! :D

re

I got my 05 Ridgeback used in Oct of 05 for 22k w/ 170miles on if from the original owner. At the time it was a steal. Still had the 2 year warrantee. The owner owned a boat dealership and he had never registered it so he gave me a puchase order so the bank would think of it as a new bike and I got a killer interest rate.

I like to buy new when I can. Typically on trucks the local dealer will find me a off lease 2-3 years old and I know its been looked over pretty good. As far as bikes I've seen a lot of them beat up with the burn outs against the wall and hand shifting know clutch. The piece you listed Ray is great and I didn't know it was available. Should def. help to sell a well taken care of used bike.

I don't look at the bike as an investment but something to enjoy life with. Yes I got a new 08 Ridgeback on order and yes I'll lose on selling my Pit when it gets here.:loony:

Over and out V.

You're suppose to get a readout any time you have warranty work done cause it used to be that BDM wanted it but maybe they have to many bikes now and no longer require it, I don't know!

VAC, did you get EFI with your new 08?

Like a few others mentioned I like to buy mine new so I know what I am getting and get exactly what I want. I never buy a bike thinking of what it will be worth if I had to sell it. I pay cash and trade-up every few years - I think I will keep my current BD and get another say k9 as the price gets more attractive.

I bought my 07 K9 new for $28k back in march. They bent me over on my trade, but whatever. Like others have stated, it's not an investment by any means other than an investment in my mental health since I enjoy it so much.

My opinion! There are advantages to both new and used. New you buy exactly what you want, it hasn't been "dog" out (sorry), and you can get a better interest rate. Used you usually save big $ on the front end and maybe this will offset the unkowns you just have to be careful and know what to look and listen for. The print out that Raywood mentioned above is a great history but its best if you know what to look for or know a good mechanic. I bought mine new in 05 because I wanted a right side drive and I wanted the 40 amp charging system. If I bought again probably "USED".
