Riding carbureted dog st. louis to phoenix

Guys,

I have a project at work requiring me to be in Phoenix, AZ for two weeks in early September. I am thinking about riding my 06 K9 from St. Louis to Phoenix. I am planning on taking I-44 to Oklahama City, 40 to I-17, and I-17 into Phoenix.

Am I going to have problems with elevation changes with my stock super-g carb? Phoenix elevation 1100ft, St. Louis 500 ft above sea level.

I don't anticipate any issues, but thought I would ask some of the experienced riders here just in case.

Also, any word on the Big Dog Dealer in Phoenix? I'll need an oil change before I make the trip back.

Jim,
props to you for wanting to ride out from St Louis - there's a lot of boring interstate between Oklahoma City and AZ. Lot's of wind and semi truck traffic. No worries on the carb issues. You may notice a slight reduction in HP when in the higher elevations (about 7,000 ft at Flagstaff and 5-6k in the high parts of NM) but once you get down to Phx, there won't be a noticeable difference to what you are used to.

You won't have any issues with the carb, there may be an extrememly slight decrease in horsepower above 7-8k feet and a slower idle because of the thinner air but hardly noticable. I have the same super-g carb with the Yaffe Phantom exhaust (no baffles), tuned for sea level since I live in Seattle. Last month rode to the top of Mt. Evans road (CO-5) which peaks out at 14,130 feet...the bike ran very well.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. Its nice to know from people who have been there done that that I won't have any problems. I'd prefer to take back roads, but I'll only have 3 days to get there so if I decide to do this, it will be the super slab.

Holy #$^, you rode to the top of Evans!!! Yikes. Then again...going up is nothing compared to handling that bad boy all the way down. Very cool.

Must have been quite the trip. Where did you go?

Cool. Post of the day. Jealous.

That will be a hell of a ride in 3 days. hopefully you dont have any problems or bad weather.
There are 2 dealers out here and if nothing else you could change it at my house if it's not the beginning of Sept.

Send me a PM when you are coming out here. I don't think you will have any problem with elevation. I've rode up to 9000ft out here with no problems.

Thanks Boomer and it was a hell of a ride! Took a 3 week road trip from Seattle to Ensenada, Mexico via the coast highways. Then up to Sturgis through Denver (including Mt Evans Road & Trail Ridge Road) followed by a fairly straight shot back home. Bike was great and managed to (barely) sqeeze out 12k miles out of this rear tire.

I live just outside of Tulsa, Ok, and have made that trip several times. It should be a breeze and no problems. Like it has been said, lots of boring highway, but there is some great scenery also. Some of the mountains in New Mexico and upper Arizona can get pretty cool at night so keep that in mind. If you have any problems, pm me and I'll give you my number if you want it.:flag:

I appreciate all the info guys. I haven't made a final decision yet on my trip, but as of right now I'm leaning on riding. I put the bike in the shop today for a 15,000 mile maintenance cycle and to check things over so that it would be ready in time. I'm no longer worried about an oil change while I'm out there in Phoenix. If I leave St. Louis with fresh everything I can stretch it 4000 miles no problem. I'll pack a quart of oil with me in case she burns some on the trip. It's going to be a 3000 mile round trip, plus whatever I ride while I'm out there. The bike has been babied and well taken care of so after further thought, I'm not worried about it. Picking up a screw or nail in that 300 rear tire, that worries me, but I'll be carrying a tire plug kit and air pump. Plug the bitch and roll on.

Well guys, my ride to Phoenix is over before it started. Scheduling changes with the project have made it impossible for me to ride out there on my k9. Thanks to everyone who offered their driveway for my oil change. Looks like I'll have to settle for renting a Harley for a day while I'm out there if I get a free day to spend riding.
