585 or 600 cam

I installed the 585 cam in mine and like the results
There is no room in the current springs to install the 600
You need compression up and new springs and roller rockers
I believe you will do more damage and less power in its current state
without changing the items listed above
Its all about combinations that build power
If the spring change and roller rockers were done you could survive
just my 2 cents

I have never heard that you need to change the roller rockers with the .600 cam. I know I didn't. What I have read on this forum is that if the springs have the red stripe on them, then they are good for the .600 cam. It's a simple change for most any mechanic to change it out. You will need to check to see what springs you have. Like someone said earier, once you feel what a larger cam does for performance, you'll want more. Anything larger than a .600 and you may need to modify your roller rockers for higher lift. John Sachs could tell you more on this. Where are ya John?

I thought the TP rocker boxes had roller tip rockers Brad? Or did you change yours out. V

Fmschatz I think the easy start cams are for twin cam bikes only. More room for the cam guts due to it being two seperate cams on the twin cam engine.

Last but not least you might want to talk to Bob Woods as well. Woods Cams. I went with a .590 (just a tad larger than the .585 S&S) It has less duration which helps to build cylinder pressure. I'm pleased with it. :cheers:

As Brad stated,if you have the red stripe springs,you're good for the .600" cam.
That's the cam I like to use for a middle of the road reliable build.It has a 10 degree later intake closing than the .585",and more intake duration.The .600" will scrub off a little compression compared to the .585"(.600" cam has the same intake closing as the .546" cam).It's not a valve pounding cam like some of the other NOISEY aftermarket cams,and you won't need to touch up the valve job every several thousand miles.:loony:
If you're gonna do the motor,you should cover all the issues,pistons in the hole,valvetrain geometry,and compression.:up:

John :What kind of power increases HP & Torque can a typical 117ci Bigdog S&S benefit ...all thing being equal pipes & Aircleaner mods ..cam alone ? I'm still running the stock cam 07 have the springs with the red stripe but the bike runs so strong as is its hard to pull the trigger on this ...any down sides to this mod ...increased valve-train wear ? Also what cam was the stock cam in 07 ?

THe factory transitioned cams starting in 05 with the comp cams .569 lift later in 07 I believe was the .546 S&S (def .546 in 08).

I'd be guessing on a cam alone swap...never done just that.Doing the whole combination should put you in the 120 hp. range.
The cylinder pressure with the .600" cam,will be the same as the .546" cam.
If you're going to get into further mods,IMO,the .600" is as good a cam for all around as you can get.Easy on the valve train as well.:2thumbs:

When you say "doing the whole combination"...are you referring to cutting the cylinders, port and polish the heads, change springs and .600 cam? I had this done on my K-9 by Cycle City of TN. I didn't get it dynoed due to being new and not broken in so I am curious as to what my numbers would be.

yes what you had done :up:........but what's to break in?If you didn't change pistons,or rings,or flywheels,there's nothing to break in.:confused:

The bike was brand new...new motor. Didn't want to run it hard on the dyno just to get the numbers.

What brand or style of exhaust have you used that provides the best performance when installed with the .600 cam and head work? Sound is always a factor but I'm looking to get good performance for the money I dumped into the engine.
