Many of you know I recently had issues when my speedo/tach/tail lights and plate light go out.
After going through several local bike shops and ass pain in the Virginia Beach area to include having a Bayside Harley mechanic (friend of a friend) stop by and take a look at my electrical problem my 03 Mastiff was having, it was determined by more then one mechanic that it was an EHC related problem. I was at wits end and about to order a WP unit from Jake (one of the good guys). I even went so far to haul my dog down to a bike shop in Moyock NC, as I was told they had the best electrician around and he could fix anything. So after two weeks of sitting in a Bubbas shop listening to him make excuses of why he didn't have time to work on my bike, and that I had to buy my own parts for him to fix the bike, I decide to try one more time and go outside the local area for help.
I contacted Lee at Departure Bike Works, Richmond VA and explained him my problem. When I asked if they knew much about Big Dog electrical systems, he laughed and said they have been in business for over 40 years fixing screw ups from other bike shops and they were an authorize Big Dog service center.
Long story short, I dropped the bike off Saturday and got a call early this afternoon telling me my bike was ready for pickup. When I asked what was fixed, thinking they had to replace the EHC and how much I owed. Ernie the mechanic that worked on the bike said it was a broken tail light wire, and was an easy and cheap repair.
Fibersnake, you and some others were right in that it was a short and not the EHC :2thumbs:
Lesson learned; I will drive the extra miles knowing there is a competent shop to work on my Dog.
Oh and the cause for the wire breaking I believe was (my fault and not the EHC going bad). In my haste to sample some wine, I took the Dog off roading on a short cut through a Knotts Island Winery two weeks ago. Apparently in my running the Big Dog like a trail bike compressed the suspension enough to rub the wires inside the fender causing the short.
All is well and I am back on the road
