Dead Dog

Friday I rode my '05 chopper home from work and inadvertantly left the ignition switch in the on position. 2 hours later the bike is dead. Used a jump pack and it started right up. Took a ride into the city (about 20 -25 miles) most of it a highway speed, and parked. Came out 3 hours later, turned the key, lights and everything real bright, hit the start button and "click, click".

Tried (in vain) to push start it and instead rode wifes bike back home, got the jump pack and returned to jump it. "Click, click", nada, naught, nothing. So, drove home again, got the trailer and by now a storm has rolled in and it is pouring out.

Get the bike in the trailer, get it home and put the battery on the battery tender.

Next morning, turn the key, lights dim, hit start and nothing. Lights go out, no click, nada.

Bring battery in, have it checked (10 volts) and under load, nothing. Buy new battery, put it in and turn key on....nothing. No lights, no ehc lights, nothing. Check fuse (looks good), bring battery back and have checked, fully charged and under load looking excellent.

Bring bike to shop (since I will be out of state for next two weeks) and tell them the symptoms. Let them know that I plan on leaving for Sturgis on the 7th of August. Response is that they can't guarantee they can get around to looking at by then as they are so backed up with BDM repairs. Apparently they even have their parts department and others doing oil changes and such just so the techs can continue to work on other, more complicated bike issues.

So, hopefully today I will be able to smooze the crew and see if they can't take a quick peek and see if it's something simple (fingers crossed). Don't understand how a bike that has started effortlessly all season would succumb to this just over a dead battery.

Any thoughts?

The battery is the life blood of our bikes. Many electrical issues with our bikes start with the battery. One week before Sturgis and you will probably get that answer from most shops in the country.
Which battery did you buy?
Did you put the battery in?
Did you take steel wool or some fine sandpaper to the terminals and connectors before you hooked the new battey up.

You have to figure:
It was working fine before the battery failed
You bought and installed a new battery
It doesn't work now

There aren't to many things in there that you have to ckeck to find out what is wrong and it is something simple.

Purchased the same battery as I had before (a HD softail) that has worked for me for the past 3 years without any issues. Terminals on the old and new were hit with sandpaper and same for the terminals. That's why it is so odd.

no expert here but I've read that jumping the BD can be tricky. Granted you used a jump pack not a running car/truck which is a bad idea.
Have you checked the "how to" check the EHC lights/codes if not worth a search to check it out.
Good Luck

I wanted to look at the EHC lights, but even with a new battery, no lights come on, including the ehc

wonder if that damed headlight plug melted from being left on.. may have shorted the ehc... check the ehc for fault codes.. remove the headlight bulb to check the plug... unless you have had it up graded..

RD, I would ensure you didn't drop any wires to each of the battery posts. I know on mine that I have 3 on one side and 5 on the other and I count them each time I pull the battery.
If all you did was change batteries and nothing else then I would verify I didn't drop a wire like the one to the EHC.

Ray, that might be something, because I hooked the new battery to (2) red wires (1 positive cable and 1 going to a 40 amp fuse) and the black ground wire. I figured that should have least gotten me lights or something.

When I have replaced the battery it has come with the fluid seperate from the cell. I had to fill the battery and then charge it on the charger overnight before it had enough juice to start the bike. Once that was done everything started just fine.

Was the battery that you bought sealed and pre-charged?

Well, got the bike back and it is ready to go. Issue was exactly what Ray said, I was missing a wire that went to the ehc when I put in the new battery. So, here I was thinking I was going to have to replace it and all it was a simple fix, that being a new battery. Thanks to Jeff, the tech at Fury MC for taking the time after his long work day to resolve the problem.
