Draining the Crankcase?

Guys
I drained my oil tank and the crankcase on my bike (2008 mastiff, 117 engine) I would like to know if I turn over the engine for about 5 to 8 seconds with the plug wires off. Will the oil pump put oil back in the crankcase? Is there any procedure that I should follow before I start the bike after pulling that plug off?

P.S. If you’re wondering why I dropped the crankcase plug. That's the original oil and I wanted to inspect the magnetic plug and see the amount of metal stuck to it. Only very fine pieces of metal but that oil was VERY dirty.
Cheers Boris

Boris, I to would like to drain my crankcase and was wondering the same thing. I'm just purchased my 2008 K-9 and the dealer said they were running RevTeck Synthetic, I want to change over to Screaming Eagle Synthetic. I would like to remove as much of the RevTeck as possible. I noticed in the manual it states not to drain the crank case. I had a dealer tell me to drain it before changing brands. The reason I'm going with the Harley oil is I have two Harleys and that oil on hand. I was thinking myself, remove the plug wires and plugs for easy turn over and let crank case fill as well as oil cooler before firing up engine.

Anyother thoughs out there would greatly be appreceated!!

Maybe I am missing something here, isn't the evo motor a "dry sump" system? If yes, the crankcase does not "hold" oil as would a oil pan in a car engine. This frees up the reciprocating mass to not be splashing around in a pool of oil. If I am correct, and I am pretty sure I am, do the following: drain the oil tank, drop the oil filter, clean the screen at the engine block(right side by the oil pump) and replace the screen, fill tank with fresh oil, crank the engine and let it run until fresh oil come out the oil filter boss, shut off engine, replace filter, top off oil tank(around a quart), and you have just replaced ALL the oil with the new oil type.
Be sure to take a old milk jug and make a big funnel to catch the oil running out the oil filter boss into a catch pan.
This is the way I do a "COMPLETE" oil change.

Bowhunter, yes you are correct on the dry sump system. With the dry sump wouldn't there still be oil laying in the bottom of the crankcase? Why would the dealer tell me to remove the bottom plug and make sure all oil is removed? Basically we are talking the residual oil left in the bottom case. Maybe you could anwser this as well, will the oil cooler drain back and if so where? My first thought is out the oil filter boss or do I have to remove the cooler and lines to drain?

Thanks!!

You are correct but when you shut the motor off all the oil in the cylinders and such will drain into the crankcase. When you start up the motor the scavanger will return it to the oil bag.

Plus sometimes the checkvalve in the oil pump will stick and allow the oil in the bag to drain into the crankcase. This is the case when some on here start there motors up and the vent line drains it to the floor.

I removed my crankcase drain years ago when I first got my 05 but wasn't much in it so haven't done it since. Just do the start method and let all the old oil run out of the filter housing before putting the filter on. This gets about all the oil except whats in the return line.

:iagree:

'cept I use the scavenger, but same principal, you end up pumping out every bit of old oil and replacing it with all fresh oil.

Raywood, when you say use the start methed, are you referring to spining the engine over a few times with plugs pulled or something else?

Thanks!!

Start the motor with the plugs in and let it idle until fresh oil comes out the oil filter boss.
The engine is being oiled, so no harm comes to the engine. Just remember to shut it off when fresh oil comes out and put on the filter, and top off the tank.

At what rate can I expect the oil to come flying out the boss when the engine is at idle?

Thanks!

It going to come out like pouring maple syrup from a bottle! It is not going to spray or anything like that.
