thanks Ray, I called baker and they're closed for the day. I'll try tomorrow. BTW steve at bikersdream also said you need speacial tools to get the starter apart, not a job for average backyard mechanic. ?? Looks like madmarx got it apart ok.

Did you need any speacial tools? I called baker and they told me Bdm did their own thing with the starters.:bang: He said he couldn't even sell me a replacement because "we're not doing starters right now".TheDeadOne

They were built "proprietary" for BDM buy someone for the life of me that I can't remember their name, damn it! :bang:
I think that they're in Canada, if I'm not totally loosing my mind. :loony: :crazy:...:lol:
But there are a couple on ebay. Just make sure that they are the 2.0K ones. :2thumbs:

Please tell me you just looked at the picture wrong.
The "o-ring seal groove" is actually on the other side of that housing where it goes into the primary case. At least on mine there wasn't any seal between that gear housing and the rest of the starter.
Should there be?
I was thinking there should have been a complete gasket between the 2 parts but there wasn't anything. I guess one isn't needed if there really isn't suppose to be any oil in there anyway.

Bob L told me the name of the starter and I forgot. For some reason I'm thinking he said "Daisy" but not sure.
No luck at the HD shop for seals and the one main autoparts store (Robbin's Autoparts) guy was completely useless. He didn't want to take the time to actually go look and compare any o-rings.
At this point I'm just going to put it back together and ride the F'n thing!!!

You're also right about the location of the o-ring between the starter and the inner primary housing. :2thumbs:
The sealed bearing is right behind the actual "starter drive gear" that engages with the ring gear on the clutch basket when the starter is energized. :2thumbs:

After seeing your pics I finally pulled the starter on my 06 K9. After breaking it down to parade rest mine looked even worse than yours did on the inside! I have never had any starter problems though. After looking at everything and finding where the leak was comming from, the starter o-ring had nothing to do with the leak. The leak is 100% caused by the primary being over serviced and oil going into the starter and coming out a bottom drain hole. I have the dealership to thank for that! They overservised the primary so much that after a ten mile ride by back tire, fender, and back of my shirt was covered in oil!!! :bang::bang::bang:

My 06 Mastiff is also leakig. Are you sure the service department over filled your primary? I do all my own work and service and I do not over fill my primary. So why all the leaks? Is the o-ring the problem? O-rings can be purchased anywere, no need to go to BD dealership.

I have only taken my bike to the dealer once and that was for the 500 mile break in service during my warrenty period, which was just before I shipped the bike to Guam. I never had any kind of leak untill I took it in, then the next thing I know on the way home my whole back side is covered in oil! Non the less as in Madmarx pictures, my starter looked just the same. The oil was comming out through the bottom of the starter; if there was an o-ring failure the oil would have been coming out between the primary case and starter housing.

I'm not asking about the outer o-ring here.
Sorry if I'm just too dense and not getting this but the problem area appears to me to be in this housing.Is there a sealed bearing or seal that is not visible behind the starter pinion gear?
If there is then I need to take my starter back out!!!:bang:

I got the same leak on my 2005 chopper, guess i need to buy a new starter , or have it rebuilt, thought it was the primary , added the vent and now i see its comming from the hole in the starter.
what about cleaning the starter and adding the drain mod ??
