Wide Tire?

First post---

Long time Harley rider--- last 2 bikes an '08 Road King Classic, and currently an '09 Electra Glide (for sale by the way!)

thinking about making the change to a custom- 'chopper' style bike-maybe a k9- not into the long miles anymore

The bikes I've been looking at all have a 250 to 300 rear tire

I was told that the new wide Avons ride very well, but most others you have to 'get up on the edge' when turning (whatever that means)

We ride 2-up most of the time

My question--- how much of a change can I expect adjusting to the wide tire--difference in comfort for a passenger?? (no, I haven't ridden one yet)

Also, I was looking at an 06 Ness bike-- has the S&S 124" motor-- supposed to have less than 2000 miles on it (the bike)---I noticed that there was some obvious chrome patches peeling from the top of the covers-

Does S&S have an issue with peeling chrome?

thanks--

I got 2 HDs as well & a dog.. my pit has a 300 on it.. there is some difference.. but I have no issues with any of them.. maybe go to a dealer & test ride some & see what fits you..

Just something to get used to. It's cake to ride 2 up or otherwise, don't let anyone tell you different.

No S&S per se does not have an issue with peeling chrome. The chrome plating market in general has an issue with peeling chrome on aluminum especially. Only a few chromers are good at it, Brown's plating is one of them, and the aftermarket parts I have on my bike that are starting to bubble are just one example of those that aren't.

The longer wheel base takes more getting use to than the wider tire. A couple of times around the and you are good to go.

The only difference in riding with a wider tire is that you have to put a little more effort into your lean. This because the wide rear tire naturally makes the bike want to stand straight up. After 15 minutes on the bike you'll have it figured out. No biggie at all!! You'll experience a whole new way of riding on a BigDog. I have a 2008 Bigdog K9 with the 300 rear tire.

I went from a 05' chopper with a 250 to a 07' k9 with a 300 as mister said after about 15 min or so you will get the hang of a larger tire, luv the 300.:2thumbs:

I wish I had more money.
Get it out in a big parking lot ride it around a few minutes. If you've been riding for a while you wont have any issues. This was my first wide tire bike and I really couldn't tell any difference.

Prior to my buying my mastiff 2009 (300 rear), I had not ridden a motorcycle on close to 23 years.I rode it at the dealer and then on the highway. Same techinque with countersteering worked well for me after all these years. Yeah I had to get used to riding such a large bike (biggest one I rode 23 years ago was a 150cc in europe) but after that I just have to say I am a proud BigDog owner and rider. Will never ride another type!:flag::2thumbs:

thanks again for the responses and experiences--

so, no big issue for the passenger either, I assume--

I am a little concerned about the claimed mileage--- this is a dealer with a pretty good reputation, but is very small-time. he has an 06 k-9 with 4600 miles, and a Ness Highliner with 1800 miles, priced at $16000 and $21500--
Is it easy to fake the low miles? any tell-tale signs to look for with faked low miles?

Another issue, NO TEST RIDES! I can probably bring a mechanic to his shop to check it out, and I can under why a private party might not want to let test rides, but a dealer? He starts them up for me, but that is it.

Any idea what it runs to have both covers re-plated???

Hey Sam, I am 6'5" and the girlfriend is right at 6' tall herself. She claims the K9 with just the pillion seat and the tall sissy bar is more comfortable than most bikes she has been a passenger on. The passenger pegs are low enough that she doesn't have her knees at her chin (which is nice position for her, but not for the kind of ride we are talking here). Naw, all jokes aside she is tall and she has no problem doing a hundred or so miles back there. Besides the damn bikes are so fricken sexy, I betcha she will love riding it with you.

My only comment on handling is just like every one elses. No big deal. You will take to it like a pig to ... well you know.

Enjoy and show us the pictures when you get it!
