Headbolt Cover Question?

Okay guys don't laugh. I am a new Big Dog owner ( 08 K9) and am fairly mechanicly inclined. I am currently waiting on my service manual, but I went out and purchased BDM Headbolt covers from my dealer thinking these should be a snap to install only to find out that the ignition cover must be removed to install the inner covers, which appears to be connected to the engine mount.
My question is;
Do I remove the entire ignition (all three bolts) and when re-installing and do I use Locktite on the bolts to re-intall.

i am not familiar with the 117 but on my 107 i didnt have to remove the mount to install the head bolt covers,are you sure you have too?

i,ve got the 117 . put head bolt covers on no problem just put them on top of the bolt and tighten down the allen screw. if were talking about the same thing? good luck keep it simple :2thumbs:

Yep, remove top and both head fasteners!

Re-install:

Top = Torque to 80 ft. lbs using Loctite "RED" Steel on Steel
Lowers = Torque to 35 ft. lbs using Loctite "BLUE" Steel on Aluminum

On a BDM 117" 90% of the time the coil cover will need to be removed to install headbolt
Covers.

Very tight clearance there!

Top = Torque to 80 ft. lbs using Loctite "RED" Steel on Steel
Lowers = Torque to 35 ft. lbs using Loctite "BLUE" Steel on Aluminum

Okay guys, I went out and bought a new Torque wrench and the SAE hex heads to go with it. Now someone has told me it's a good idea to replace any bolts I remove with fresh ones that haven't been torqued before, which kind of makes sence since the old bolts have already had the stress of torque on them. My question is: is this necessary? They are mortor mount bolts and where do I order them, from BD or a dealer or can I get them else where. Any input would be appeicated. Thanks!

I am not sure why the need of removing the coil cover to put the Bolt Covers on. The ones I put on my 2005 117 went on with no problem. A little tight space to get them on, but doable with no issues.

Believe me I have tried, there is no way they will go on without removing the coil cover, the cover must be wider on the 08's.

The coil cover/top motor mount is not your ignition (just saying!!!). Yes, I had to loosen mine up to install the caps on the head bolts.
Many threads here on this and if I was you I would go down to your local nut & bolt store and get some longer bolts to put back in. Your heads will except up to 1/2" longer and they will hold better than the short ones that are on there now.

Now need to replace them though if you want to use them again.

There are 2 or 3 veriations over the years of the coil cover. So they will very from year to year.

What Raywood said. No need to replace except for slightly longer ones, more thread contact, less likely to vibrate loose.
