Can someone please read this and offer advise . My 06 mastiff trans feels like it is slippin teeth in 3rd gear. Feels like ridin a bicycle with the chain too loose and its slippin on the sprocket. only 3rd gear?? is the trans bad or maybe something just coming loose(fat chance im sure)? My 1st trans locked up going 70 mph...ride of my life!!! BDM waranty replaced it with a new one. The 2nd one was... clutch cable broke and pro street cycles in richmond attemped to replace it but couldnt get it on right. So they went and added a washer inside the trans or primary and F____ it up. they sent it back to BDM and they rebuilt it instead of replacing it(same numbers on case). My warranty was just about finished when they fixed it. Shouldn't BDM extend the warranty on the trans since if had nothing but problems with it?? I have been real easy on the bike since the first trans locked up(gun shy is more like the word...). Now with only 6500 miles on the bike, my 3rd trans is screwed up and im very frustrated. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ronbo

That's very interesting. My 2009 Wolf does sort of the same thing. Third gear is very touchy. Sometimes grinds going into third. Sometimes it slips out of third and back to second or even between gears. I've adjusted everything and all other shifting is like butter. I even talked to Baker about it to see if there is something unique about third gear. I know most of the pawl adjusting takes place while in third gear. Baker said it could be a bent pawl possibly.

I see on the baker site that they offer a 5 year warranty on softtail trans.

sorry for your problems but to answer your question no bd shouldnt have to extend the warranty, being in the automotive business once warranty is up its up, unless they want to do a goodwill jesture for you,im not sticking up for them believe me i had my issues with them, thats just how it works, good luck:cheers:

Locking up the first trany could of done clutch damage from being shock loaded Im curious what failed on the first trany BD should have records if it was warranty.

broken teeth on 2nd gear locked it up i beleive. I think they should have extended the warranty on the trans since it was constantly in the shop for trany issues. only 6500 miles for a 35,000 bike. I bought it brand new in January 07.

Sounds like one of the dogs is not holding the gear in and you may have a bent shift fork as well. I have a thread in here somewhere explaining what all was wrong with mine when it was slipping in 3rd gear. BDM repaired it and it failed within 60 miles for the same thing. I sent it to Baker who repaired it and it is still holding strong today.
Here is the thread on mine..... It covers the whole story..

Well, i talked to the Baker rep. He acted not concerned or didn't matter to him. Only to tell me to talk to BDM or send it to them at my expense and they will give it the 18 point ckeck. Coudnt give me a price but did tell me it could be anywhere from 300 to 1600. I lost even more respect for Bakers after that conversation. You'd think that these company's would be more willing to save their reputation than that. When you go to an up scale motorcycle double the price, you expect good quality and customer service
I emailed BDM....waiting for an answer

Not saying you shouldn't feel the way you do but want to point out that this is frustrating for them as well.

Baker sold them their trans at 1 point, then it was the Baker name and Baker parts that was being bought. When a BDM cust calls, they aren't 100% sure what they are dealing with until they get the trans. Things were changed once it made it to the factory which is common in the industry.

That is just my understanding and my 2 cents.

I hope you get the problem resolved quickly and to your satisfaction. It sucks to not be able to ride when you want to and it isn't your fault.

I dig it, you will get it figured out. Trust me, they want to help but their hands are tied. If you can justify it, send it to them, it will be fixed right with a warranty.

I going to have to agree with nomad..... once the shift fork engages... the dogs on the gear, it should lock up and stay engaged.... i would look at the needle bearings for 3rd gear....this design is a split needle bearing cage and they tend to come apart when the needle bearings wear....this could cause the gear to dis-engage and re-engage as the shift fork tries to force it back into posistion.

sorry about all your mis-haps but tranny needs to come out again....before it does some major damage...

Just my opnion...I will let the experts chime in...

I might offer my .02 in. I had to have my tranny rebuilt. I had a bent shift fork as one thing but other things were also my problem. I suggest you get intouch with bigdogtech01. He got me up and running in no time with a 18 mo. warranty and he was more than fair on rates. He even sent back the bad parts. I had all seals and bearings replaced and 2 shift forks. He does quality work. I had called Baker and they seemed like they could care less about my problem. Bigdogtech01(Andrew) was great and told me everything that he did. If you do a search you will find alot of my tranny problems. Search like..... http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/help-wanted/16562-ok-sorry-another-thread-but-look-what.html. Give Andrew a call or PM him. You will not regret it.

You either have bad luck or something isn't being set up correctly. To many sloppy mechanics out there that don't check adjustments and clearances.

I got a response from BDM and they said to take to one of the shops in richmond. Then have the shop contact them and we will figure out what to do next at that point. He said they wont garantee that they will cover it. Well at least they are talking to me...lol..
thanks for the input my friends. I guess im gonna take it to departure bike works first. BDM says the guy there is great with trans and clutch issuses. Maybe BDM will cover it.
But yea something is just not right.... I've had numerous dirt bikes,4 kawaskis,4 harleys and never had a transmisssion issue...
