...Sorry!

Your one of the lucky ones that can ask that question, unless your already having issues.

There really is no time. The first year I had my bike I went through 2 of them and in 2008, before doing the Wire-Plus changeover, I went through 3 or 4 in less than 6 months.

So, they can last forever or there are claims that they fail within the first 1000 miles of buying the bike. I have seen new bikes with 200 miles on them at the dealer with a failed EHC. There are guys that have never had a problem with their first one!

Good luck! :2thumbs::cheers:

That is a very "loaded" question, that there is a lot of debate about. :D

Even when the EHCs are working correctly, they are of a very "temperamental" electronic design and there are "many vulnerable" areas of the electrical system that can interrupt proper operation of the EHC.

So that being said, in "theory", it was a great idea.
But in "reality", it hasn't proven to be really so great or bullet proof to the Gremlins of real world operation!

dead,

True...

...because if it was bullet proof or a really great design, one should be able to add their Ipod plug, coffee maker, aftermarket plug wires, or accent lighting without computer issues.

As Dead stated, the EHC is really a cool design and holds some cool features within it, but it was over engineered for a Big cube V-twin bike. That EHC should be in a Mercedes controlling a fuel pump or some heated seats or something!

How long does the EHC last???.....

I bought my 05 in Oct of 04. It had an issue a month later and the EHC was replaced and a pigtail placed in the ignition switch.
The replacement is still going strong after 5 yrs.
But I'm careful of the electronics and have sealed up my wiring harness and won't install all those gadgets (lights/alarms) that some do.

I got a good one

My EHC is going to outlast my Ridgeback!! As long as it stays in a box on a shelf in my garage where it belongs. Wire Plus unit installed at 29 miles!! It was all Jakes idea:roll::roll::roll::roll:

Until it breaks. Just ride it until your ignition functions fail, then get a wire plus or rewire with a properly simplified 12v system like a chopper should have!

I wasn't aware that accent lights would cause the EHC to fail. :job: WTF. I'm going to run mine until it craps out, then go to Wire plus like I did with Rocky's mastiff. :D Who knows? If I can get a little ahead financially, I'll probably go ahead and replace it anyway and not get caught stranded in Lord knows where.

Too many great answers to quote

I like Stinky7-11 the best

P.S. I'm on my 2nd in 4yrs

Wire Plus is about the cost of a new EHC, but it needs to be wired into the harness. It's involved but very easy to do and the instructions are very very good. I personally wouldn't bother with an EHC, and wouldn't recommend anyone waste their money putting a new EHC in the bike. Get the wire plus, spend a weekend and just do it. Or like I said, get a nice set of custom bars and rewire the whole bike for 12v, and lose all the buttons and junk the bike comes with stock.

Yup, have to agree, just buy the WP from Jake, I just started mine, have about 1.5 hours into it and I am almost done. And I am NOT even remotely close to one that can emulate an electrician, technician.... etc. OR just buy my old EHC....

Well I have a 05 and my first one was changed out under a TSB though there was no porblems. The second one, I bent a pin on when putting it back together after putting di-electric greese in the connectors while trying to waterproof it better.

The current one, has been going fine for a couple of year now and at least 8k. So in short, never had one fail and the two that were replaced were not due to problems from BD part. So they both could have failed a day after change out or still being going strong like the current one.

Like Ray, no fancy mods with lights, alarms, etc. Just the basic that it came with.

Bought new in June '06, added Jakes HID light, speedo fogs up everywhere but that is not really a problem, no other electrical mods, no waterproofing, and still wash the bike with a bucket of suds and water hose, ride year round, do not bar hop or make many short trips and no EHC issues.
Also like the fact that if there is an issue, I can look at the colored lights and quickly know what the issue is.

However, if it fails, it gets replaced by whatever Nighttrain recommends.
