Ok guys, thank's for your advice...and I think Ive decided on a bike.

BIG DOG CHOPPER 2005

05 Chopper, 2500 miles, $13600.

Is there ANY reason you guys think this might NOT be a good idea.

Here's my thoughts...

I live in Cali and they have this BS law that you have to pay tax on ANY vehicle new or used. So purchasing this bike in Az (Im in the Air Force and AZ is my home of record), I save that tax right off the bat. So me having to fly in to buy the bike AND pay to ship it up to Nor. Cal still saves me money (I dont have time to ride it up there as Im in training right now).

I know some are going to say, ITS ALL UP TO YOU AND WHAT YOU LIKE, but Im asking for ya'lls opionions!

THANKS

RickyJ IMO At that price jump on it! Can you run the vin number and check if all the recalls and tech service bulletins have been preformed at the nearest BD Dealer in your area? My guess it has the OEM battery that should be changed out. Good looking bike

You can run the vin number and check if all the recalls and tech service bulletins have been preformed by calling The Big Dog factory or at any BDM dlr. Also get a printout of the history of the bike.

The person selling that scoot is selling several others also, is he a dlr?

Ricky -

go to this website - it appears as though you'll have to pay about $1500 bucks once returning to Cali for registration and fees.

Just something to think about. My brother in-law sold his 05 ridgeback to a guy in Cali who could not get the bike to pass inspection. Something about the pipes and cam work. He tried to sue him with no sucess. I think he ended up trading it in somewhere in arizona.

If you are Military you'll be exempt from all those fee's. I bought both my BDM's in San Diego and never paid more than $50 but tags.

yeah Cali is F'd up when it comes to that kind of stuff....but Im leaving Cali and headed to Miss. and Im going to register the bike in Az anyways, especially since they have a military exemption for registration and they offer renewals online.... As for the bike, he says it's completely stock....so Im hoping that wouldnt come into play.

Keep us informed it you get it. If it's stock then you will want to do a few things to it like removing the restrictor plates for one.

Looks nice. Tennessee is the same way...gotta pay taxes on any vehicle purchase, no matter if it's new or been bought/sold 20 times. It sucks but it's part of life. On the bright side it's 6% and then like $15 for tags.

I'd be all over it at that price.

I am a little confused on the registration also. I served 20 years and always kept my Home of Record in Kentucky. Stationed all over and was able to keep the vehicles registered in Kentucky since I was resident just like my voters registeration.

Unless something changed or you changed you residency, you should always be able to keep it registered in your home of record for vehicle if you are in the military as you get sent all over to serve.

Good luck nonethless and in your upcoming transfer. Thank you for your service also. :flag:

Well depending on your state they sometimes let you do registration thru the mail or online..AZ is not like that. Although there are different scenerios...

Used bike from Private Party, no tax...just registration, which goes off MSRP - 16.25% per year.

Used or NEW bike from Dealer, you have to pay tax and registration.

AZ resident stationed in CA....if you want AZ plates you have to bring the car to AZ to go through emissions and to register. After the intial registration they have came out with a military exemption but its only if your deployed overseas in support of contingency ops.

One of the main reasons I want to buy in AZ is because I wont have to pay the nearly 10% (tax, title, license fees in CA) and Im getting stationed in Miss. here very soon. So this would keep me from registering in CA and then having to reregister it in Miss in 3-4 months. Even with the cost of me flying down to AZ to buy the bike and ship it, Id still save about $300-500 AND I wouldnt have to pay registration 2x in 3-4 months..

And it's confirmed the 05 I was looking at sold today....DAMMIT!! So Im on the hunt again....05+ Chopper or K9....

Jack, unless it's changed in the last 3 yrs again if you are Military in CA you just need a letter from your Command (proof of non-resident) and you'll be exempt from those taxes. I did it for 3 yrs there with my bikes.

there are 3 different fees in your registration....I dont know what they are called, but that form exempts you from the larger one. It doesnt do anything for the sales tax.

Example...I paid $40 to register my BMW where a Cali resident would have to pay like $5-600. BUT it doesnt do anything for the sales tax...but I found a loop hole for that too cause I bought mine overseas! haha Registered it in Germany (german registration, plates). Drove it for 6 months on those plates in the US although the plates were expired for 3 months.

CALI law says, either 5500 miles of 6 months registration in another state/country. SOOOO, I registrated in Internationally (3 months) and had a German Plate and Registration book. So I drove on it for 3 months expired.....figured you know, if I get pulled over by a Cop that CAN READ GERMAN, Ill take the ticket! hahaha Either way that was cheaper than the $3500 in sales tax! SCAM YES, but you know what....so is the CALI government! haha

Now back to my Big Dog purchase.....I haggling with a guy on a 07 right now.....we're real close on price, HOPEFULLY he'll call me soon and say YES!

07 K9 600 miles....

I hope it works out, just gotta get the price a lil lower to make it work! Hopefully this time next week Ill be packing for my flight to go get it and by the weekend Ill be able to post some pics up!!

I paid those fees my first year not realizing I didn't have too. All you need to do is go to your PSD and have them type out a Military Non-Resident Tax Exemp form and take it with you when you register the vehicle. I had to do it each year.

Good luck on the K-9
