Compression releases

Hello everyone.
This may be an odd question, but Im wondering what is the design of the compression releases? Specifically the eletrical layout (what connects to what). When I would press the Start button, the engine would stall for a second before turning over. I was told this is what broke my jackshaft.
My compression releases werent working correctly, and the tech said he fixed it easily; didnt even charge me for it. I know he didnt pull the heads or anything extensive like that. So Im wondering what the heck did he do?!

Also, I heard S&S units are great. Whats the benefit of replacing the CR's with S&S units? Wouldnt they be the same thing on the S&S engine that comes factory with the scooter?

The S&S website has a schematic of the CR for your veiwing pleasure. Your CR's are S&S. BDM ties them in with it's EHC so that when you hit the start button they energize for 1 second unlike the S&S units that energize i think for 3 seconds.

Anyway, the slow starter think may be linked to weak battery connections or the battery itself.

I wired mine directly off the starter, so that as long as the starter is engaged, the release stays open. It's very easy to do.

Same here -- tied to the starter when I dumped the EHC. This is how the S&S Documents show them to be wired.

Sounds like your compression releases weren't operating and when you went to crank it, it was sluggish in the beginning of the starting process, then cranked over.
Jack shafts sometimes twist or break due to the torque of the starter being applied with too much engine resistance (no comp. reliefs) during start up.

By habit, I always push mine down manually just in case, so that doesn't happen.

just installed a set in a BD 107. followed S&S instructions which splices into the green wire to the starter. piece of cake.

Moe the high compression motor fries the starter. The bike runs like a bear but it has 230lbs of tork to start that motor and the stock starter could not take it .You know were i can get heavy duty starter for it or have my starter beef up.Beagle Man Nick

Hey all,
It was determined that my front unit stuck open and the rear stuck closed. So basically I was f*cked. Anyway, I found a site (Phat Performance Parts) that sold me the manual kit (S&S product, 90-4925) for $272.64 total at my door. So, hopefully my Lady and I will be back out in the wind this weekend! See yall at Bikeweek at Broken Spoke.

Can the S&S compression releases be wired
in the same(into the EHC) as the ones that come on the
bike? I am having my TPS replaced to S&S and a 600
cam being put in this week. They said that the old
compression release plug had to be cut and replaced
with the S&S plugs to plug in the same way.

When starting cold,, just push them both down first,
then hit the starter...

No not those, they sound like the electronic compression releases we are all familiar with, which activate only when the starter is engaged.
The only place i have seen "manual" releases placed is in the area around the spark plug.

Hey Gabriel,
Thank you for the pics. If I could afford the labor, I would have had those manual releases installed. But S&S makes a manual kit that is cable operated from one spring loaded button. Go to www.s&scycle.com and search for part 90-4925. There's a nice pic there, and also at Phat Performance Parts - Great Parts, Great Prices, Great Service, Great Website under the same part number. We're projecting to have the button mounted inside the coil cover.

I did not know about the manual ones.
You can pick these up for about 100 bucks on eBay.

The manual ones are no better (worse if you ask me) than the electric ones. Same your money and just push the ones you have in before you start up. They work manually or electrically!
