Another question about 65989-97B Batteries

Hi gang,

I've been doing some research on here and I see a lot of folks are using these 65989-97B Harley batteries on their BDM's.

My current battery is a Drag Specialties Model 2113-0012 which is 310 CCA's.

I have found some of the 65989-97B batteries, but it seems the part number may be the same as the UBVT-1 part numbers.

Well, I found this generic 65989-97B/UBVT-1 battery for $69 SHIPPED. I'm not big on linking non-sponsor shops, but here is the link I found it in: UBVT-1 V-Twin AGM Motorcycle Battery - OEM#65989-97B - HARLEY-DAVIDSON Motorcycle Batteries - Powerstride Battery

My question, is should I go back with the Drag Specialties battery for $98 shipped, or would it be ok going with the cheaper knock-off battery? Both are 310 CCA's. I'm looking for the best battery. I plan on using a trickle charger, which I already have on the bike now.

What do ya'll think? I called my local BD dealer, and their batteries are 275 CCA, and are $135+tax. The dealer guy told me I didn't need 310 CCA, but that puppy turns over so good, that I want the replace with the same high power. Those Braillie batteries are out of my price range.

Best bat I have gotten was a HD AGM (glass mat) bat, was like $109 bucks. I took my old battery in and they matched it up for me. I think its 280 or 290 amps can't remember.

Also always keep hooked up to a bat tender. :hi:

Also if you buy it local it easier to deal with if you have a problem vs shipping back

My advice is to "Upgrade" to the Braille battery which has even more CCAs and will help prevent much more battery and current issues down the road in the future. BDM keeps moving up as battery technology gets better and more readily available, so why shouldn't you and me, we've also got BDMs? I know it will cost you some more $$$, but it's well worth the loss of the headaches! :2thumbs:

Well here's another question.

It seems from my experience that whether I buy a $50 battery or $200 battery that they will only last 2 years. Or that's the experience I've had with my 4 wheelers and jet skiis. I seem to religously change them every 2 years.

That nice Braille (spelling?) Is nice but if it will only last 2 years then I could buy 2 cheapos for the price of 1. What's the part number on those by the way.

What are everyones feeling on the Odyssey Battery?

I picked one up the other day for an AIH and I love how compact it is.

Prices seem reasonable on it as well.

Thinking about setting up with them as a dealer.

Deka-East Penn makes the battery for BDM & H-D, it is a gas-mat designed battery made for motorcycles, ATV, and personal watercraft. I would Google it or check in your area for a dealer, I use to buy them all the time when I lived in VA.
There warehouse was located in Ashland, just outside of Richmond. I think the last one I bought cost me around $75..

Spelling? Yea, you might want to consider taking the extra credit course. :D j/k :lol::roll:

When you've spent as money as you did on buying a Big Dog, why "cheap out" on the proper maintenance of it?

That seems like a crazy good deal on a high CCA battery. Free shipping to boot. Do you know if these batteries are the same physical size as the one in my K9?

I looked that battery up, and the price is good, but I can't find a 310CCA model. All of them I see are 270CCA. I'm sure 270 would work fine, but I don't really want to "down grade" from what I have now.

Obviously physical size is important to me. I do plan on using the battery tender when the bike sits more than a day or two, and have one setup both at work and at home. The bike is sitting in my construction show room right now enjoying the nice 74F temp, lol. The bike cranks fine in the warm and holds a charge, but once it cools down, the battery isn't strong enough. Slow turn over, or even to the point that it's not engaging the bendix.

Still looking at options. Feel free to keep throwing them out, and I'm still reading a bunch as well.

Linx, DO NOT buy the cheap battery. I tried to cheap out by buying a Batteries Plus knock off. It was rated 310 cca, but wouldn't turn the motor over. I tried charging it and still nothing. When I returned it to the store they tested it and everything checked out fine. I went straight to the harley shop and picked up a "Harley" replacement and the bike fired right up. The only difference I could see was that the harley batt. was made in the U.S.A and the batteries plus was made in china.

Thanks knucklehead. I like hearing real-world advise like that.
So do you know what model of harley battery you have? I just want to make sure it fits in the compartment perfect. I'm also interested in another Drag Specialties like I have, and those Braille if I can strap the cash.

my stock battery went 4 years,always on a tender,the harley battery for my softail works great,they told me it has 460 cca but i dont believe it.but it works.thats al that matters.:cheers:

Part no. is 65989-976. I believe it's a softail battery. I just brought my old batt. with me and matched them up. The harley shop told me that their batteries put out more cca"s than they're rated at.
