STARTER NOT ENGAGING

Nomad,
Thank you for the info and link. I'll check it out. I got priced for a new starter at $350. Gotta love having contacts!
I was told told by a BDM tech that engaging the starter while rolling will cause this slam. I admit I was rolling backwards out of the driveway when I pressed the starter button. However, I doubt I was rolling every other time this slam had happened.
Just wanted to pass this on so others wont experience the same expensive problem.
Ba safe out there.

Not a problem...
I have another starter in the garage if you can't find one at a decent price. I have always kept a spare from my days off twisting them in half. I wasn't rolling when I did it..
I went as far as putting a slam switch on my starter now just in case I needed a direct shot. I got rid of the EHC since then though just for a piece of mind and put a Thunder-heart unit in its place.
I am from Jacksonville Florida as well but live in Tennessee now. I grew up on the west-side, Normandy and lanes blvd area. My dad now lives in Yulee by Fernandina beach on Amelia Island on the Georgia border.

I just had my starter rebuilt. From what two local shops told me you should be able to find parts for these starters.
While others have reported junk parts inside that is not what I was told.
These are a type of Toyota starter and the solenoid contacts are usually the problem.

At 15k miles my starter motor was in good shape and so was the clutch inside

The shafts that some of us are breaking I was told is common and the part is available

I paid $125 to have the starter gone thru and cleaned up

Hello all,
The starter I have now is about 10 months old, but I'm wondering if this is the original jackshaft. This is my 9th starter and 2 set of primary cases (poor machining of primary case/jackshaft hole). I found the jackshaft and ordered it yesterday. I actually dont need the starter...at least not right now. Sigh...
Have a good day all, and enjoy the ride.

Coolbreeze,
Where did you order the jack shaft from PN# and how much for it? I could use one as well....:D
Thanks,
Neil

Damn was it the same thing with all these starters or different problems?

Did BDM change the starter in the later years? I know Raywood has gone thru a lot of them too but not many people with newer models

How would i be certain the compression release is functioning properly. How to check????[/QUOTE

Touch the top of the compression rel with your finger, hit the start button as if you were starting the bike. Feel the comp rel go down. Then the same for the other cyl.
I tried to do this test on my bike due to intermittent start up issues. When I hit start button I don't feel anything under those white bubbles happen, although I can push down and feel a lever of sorts go in... Does this mean my CRs are not working?

Sounds to me like there is something wrong.

You should feel the CR's move when you hit start when touching the CR's without putting pressure on them.

I had the same problem. First open the primary. It's not difficult to open the whole cover. Than check if the shaft is OK. I had only a problem with circuit-breaker.
So I took it to the workshop and it was repaired for 50$ only.
But if U are still looking for a new one, check the link below. U don't need to pay 500$! Cheers!

05 and newer RSD use a totally different starter. It's more expensive too!

Carbon as well...
You can remove the rubber boot and spray some penetration oil on them and press on them until it frees up and pops up on it's own.

When you press them down with your finger they should pop back up on there own. They are spring returned.

I did not want to start another thread on a repeat issue. similar problem bike left me stranded at work last night. the usual click no turning over. tried a few things putting it in gear and rolling the bike, nothing. decided to give the starter a "tap" and it started to turn some. I pulled the starter and going to take it to a shop to get it rebuilt. I pulled the whole starter and when I did a loose ball bearing fell out not sure where this came from but I bagged it and taking it with the starter. This bike sucks what a piece of shit but It constantly give me problems. maybe someday I will have had enough of this bike fixed I won't have to worry if it's going to leave me stranded.

I would like to say thank you to all of you involved in this fix it. An extra thanks to 1BADK9, for asking about raising the battery tray for the k-9 i believe that is the easiest way to remove the starter. if not for you. i would have been pulling the belt .
yes i had the clunk. The gear was in the primary and i was also able to fish the gear and remaining shaft out from the starter side
thanks once again

Right On Jim, glad you are back and running, I have been well over a year now with no more starter problems, I do occassionally hit that "CLUNK" spot but only when the bike is hot. I know I depend heavily on the brians and experience on this site, and have learned so much by just reading the technical threads and past experiences of others, glad mine helped you.

Search my posts and you will see that I suffered the same issue and a work around for it. It was not a broken jackshaft, more of the jackshaft not lining up right with the teeth. A few taps on the start button and then it would engage:2thumbs:

I did purchase a rebuilt starter from Shovelheadkicker on Ebay. You are right, it was a good piece of equipment, clean and wrapped very well. I was happy for about a year until it finally snapped. So now Im back to square one again. Above is mentioned taking the broken shaft to an alternator shop. I was under the impression (from what Ive heard) that the starters are not rebuildable by the average backyard machanic. May I assume this is inaccurate or is the shaft not "inside" the starter? Are any special tools or experience needed to replace the shaft inside the starter itself? Checked with Spyke, they no longer carry starters for our bikes.

I read about the car alternator shaft fitting our starters. I made some calls to local shops, and sent some emails to BDM Corporate, and they did have a new shaft and installed it in the starter for me for $63.50. I did the R&R on the V and she runs like a champ! Im very happy I didnt have to spend another few hundreds dollars for starter #11. The part number for the shaft is 028381-0040, and the number for the starter it comes from is 028000-7300. I had mine done at Victory Auto Electric and Air, Inc. at 4521 Sunbeam Rd in Jacksonville, FL. Phone number is 904-731-5065.

As for BDM Corporate...they can fuck off, worthless pricks.

I hope the above info helps everyone. Enjoy the ride.
