DOT 5 Question ???

Does Color Matter?

BRAKE FLUID color that is...

I was bleeding my brakes last night and realized all my dot 5 fluids are different colors. I have orange in the front cylinder, green in the rear cylinder, and the new dot 5 I bought was purple.

Any danger in topping off with a different color fluid?

I would think Dot 5 is dot 5 you know... its probably like anything else they want to try to be different from there neighbor.... I like the orange color best if that helps ya...

You should change your fluid once and a while I would just bleed it out!!:2thumbs:

I have used just about all the colors of dot 5 out there in cars at work.
I don't believe it is a problem to mix them as long as they are true dot 5 silicon fluids.
I prefer to use the purple as in my experience it is the most recognized color for dot 5.
I have had customers top off the orange with dot 3. It seems when people see the purple they stop and say"oh yea" dot 5
couldn't hurt to read the labels to be sure.

sounds like somebody is tryin' to put all the colors of the rainbow in your brake system to turn it gay.

The colors are there so when you're bleeding the system you know when you have good new fluid at each caliper. Think big systems on cars. Same principle works for bike thought. When you see your old purple stuff turn to clean red, you know you got all the old stuff out.

I believe general electric originaly made dot 5 for aerospace. It is purple
other brands that GE is the parent company was purple.
Dot 5 has become more common in the past few years there are many offerings now.
I'm not sure if other brands are purple now too.
