Speedometer Problem

Hope this hasn't been discussed before, if so just lead me to the thread. Anyhow...... It wasn't bad at first, after starting the bike and moving, I noticed the speedometer wasn't working. When I would stop and shut it off and restart, then it would work. Only happened once in a while, now it does it every time I start the damn bike. Now I just get going, after about 3rd or 4th gear, hold the clutch in, shut off the bike, restart, let the clutch out and keep going. Tired of stopping to make the damn speedometer work. Do I need another speedometer or is there possibly a sensor bad somewhere??

My 07 K9 did that. Replacing the battery fixed my problem. Apparently the voltage dropped too much durring starting.

The speedometer will do that if you don't let it cycle through its pulse signal.

How long have you had your K9?
You need a battery tender on it at all times.
When I bought my K9 they gave me all kinds of excuses about the speedo needing to cycle.
Once I started using the battery tender no more problems

I sure wish every one here would update there profile to show what year and model of bike they have. :argue:

Big difference between an 02, 03, 06 and 07 Mastiff just for example.

Onaprwl, posted here thousands of times. Does your speedo sweep once or twice when you start it up. Do you have an 06 or newer K-9?

See my vid on flashing the EHC so that the speedo gets a proper power up cycle. It's in the "General" section under member vids.

OK, Great info. Think I will try the battery tender first being where I don't get to ride it that often. That will probally fix the problem from what you guys have said. Also just for info, it is a 2007 and the speedometer sweeps once, about 5000 miles on it.:2thumbs: Thanks
Raywood, love your speedometer. Got sidetracked at first staring at the picture, had to replay to here what you said. Is that little gismo just something you plug in to what ever is there now or do I have to change wiring?

it has to be flashed by a big dog repairer and you dont have to buy anything as you will already have the usb port.

there's a speedo sensor on top of the transmission unscrew the sensor pull it out and clean off. see if that fixes it. in the 2008 owners manual it mentions doing this when you change the transmission fluid. it takes about 10 minutes easy access and esay to do.

On his 06 he may still have the "serial" style port as seen in my vid. Only the USB style can be flashed.

My 07 did the same thing, under warranty the dealer tried to flash with the double sweep and couldn't do it with the EHC that was in my bike. They replaced the EHC with the latest and added the new program to doulbe sweep and it hasn't done it since, over 1-1/2 yrs ago.
I was told the second sweep happens after the bike is started so there is not a drop in voltage when the speedo does its thing.
